Terron Armstead restructures Miami Dolphins contract to help team with salary cap

Dolphins left tackle Terron Armstead restructured his contract to help the team as it's in a tight salary cap crunch.

Armstead's new contract will save Miami $10.29 million against the cap this season, according to numbers obtained by Over The Cap.

Armstead, 32, agreed to reduce his total salary by $4.25 million while receiving $10 million in guaranteed salary. The new contract affects his cap hit in 2024 but not 2025 and 2026.

Armstead said soon after the season that he had not decided whether he would continue to play. Miami's desire to reduce his salary could have been a factor, of course.

Armstead is a five-time Pro Bowler, including the past two seasons with Miami.

When healthy, Armstead is a standout protector for Tua Tagovailoa.

Armstead allowed only one sack last season and was Pro Football Focus' 16th-graded offensive tackle.

Of course, Armstead has played 23 of 34 regular-season games over the past two seasons.

That's why Miami will need to add a capable backup tackle. Kendall Lamm, who was solid in that role last season, is a free agent.

Miami has signed center Aaron Brewer from the Titans in free agency.

Last year, they re-signed starting right tackle Austin Jackson.

Liam Eichenberg and Robert Jones figure to compete for a starting guard position. And Miami should have enough wiggle room to add another interior lineman in free agency at some point. Or they could always add an offensive lineman in the first or second round of the upcoming NFL draft.

Armstead is a key team leader as well as a Pro Football Writers' Association Good Guy Award winner.
