Tennessee basketball walk-on Kent Gilbert enters transfer portal

Tennessee basketball guard Kent Gilbert entered the transfer portal Tuesday, he told Knox News.

Gilbert has two years of eligibility remaining, including his extra year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gilbert played 12 minutes in six games. He scored three points in 22 minutes in 11 career games. He made a 3-pointer against USC Upstate on Dec. 14, 2021.

The 6-foot-1, 178-pound Gilbert hopes to take a similar path to that of Brock Jancek, who transferred from Tennessee following last season. Jancek, who was a walk-on at UT, transferred to ETSU and averaged 4.5 points and 2.7 rebounds in 14.9 minutes per game.

Gilbert will graduate from UT in May with his degree in recreation and sport management. He was one of six seniors recognized on senior day along with Josiah-Jordan James, Tyreke Key, Olivier Nkamhoua, Uros Plavsic, and Santiago Vescovi. James, Nkamhoua, Plavsic, and Vescovi have a year of eligibility remaining due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gilbert is the son of Jon Gilbert, the East Carolina athletic director and former executive senior associate athletic director at Tennessee.

Tennessee is on track to have two or three open scholarships depending upon Julian Phillips' decision. Phillips could enter the NBA Draft as a one-and-done or return to UT. Any additional attrition would open up more scholarships.
