Blog replay: Tennessee baseball eliminates Southern Miss to reach College World Series

HATTIESBURG, Miss. − Tennessee baseball is playing for a trip to the College World Series.

The Vols face Southern Miss in Game 3 of the Hattiesburg Super Regional on Monday (6 p.m. ET, ESPN). The will goes to Omaha and the loser's season is over.

The Vols rallied to win 8-4 in Game 2 on Sunday to extend the series into a decisive final game to determine a College World Series berth. Tennessee (42-20) lost 5-3 to Southern Miss (46-19) in the first game, which started Saturday and was suspended before concluding Sunday.

Ninth inning

Southern Miss 9th: A walk and an error puts a couple runners on, but Burns gets a popup and a line-out to end it.

Eighth inning

Tennessee 8th: No runs for the Vols in the 8th. Three outs away from Omaha. UT leads 5-0.

Southern Miss 8th: Chase Burns has faced five batters and retired all five with four strikeouts.

Seventh inning

Tennessee 7th: Maui Ahuna home run leads off the inning. Tennessee 5, Southern Miss 0.

Southern Miss 7th: Beam allows back-to-back singles to open the inning, and that'll be it for him. Very good outing for the sophomore from Murfreesboro.

Sixth inning

Tennessee 6th: Matthew Adams to pitch for USM. Game 1 starter Billy Oldham was up in the bullpen, but Golden Eagles will need to claw closer to get him involved.

Southern Miss 6th: Same deal, different inning. A soft single to center, but nothing else in the USM 6th. Beam up to 98 pitches.

Fifth inning

Tennessee 5th: Zane Denton 3-run home run is the big swing the Vols have needed in this game. Tennessee 4, Southern Miss 0.

Southern Miss 5th: USM down 1-2-3. Beam threw 9 pitches in the frame.

Fourth inning

Tennessee 4th: Christian Scott singles with two out, but nothing else for the Vols. Nikko Mazza has allowed the lone run of the game through 4, throwing 74 pitches. USM would be very happy for another scoreless inning for Mazza.

Southern Miss 4th: Beam up to 63 pitches. A single and a walk, but a couple groundouts end the threat.

Third inning

Tennessee 3rd: Vols get the first two to reach, but can't move them over. Vols up 1-0 through 3.

Southern Miss 3rd: The Golden Eagles have had some singles sprayed around so far, but nothing hit hard against Drew Beam.

Second inning

Tennessee 2nd: Christian Moore singles, Zane Denton walks, Griffin Merritt singles, Moore scores. Tennessee 1, Southern Miss 0.

Vols do leave two runners on after having them on with no out.

Southern Miss 2nd: A single and a HBP, but nothing else in the USM 2nd.

First inning

Tennessee 1st: Jared Dickey grounds into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

Niko Mazza is USM's starter today.

Southern Miss 1st: Drew Beam allows a single then strikes out the side. Good start for the Vols sophomore.
