Tennessean wins 4 APSE awards for sports journalism coverage in 2023 including digital

The Tennessean won four awards in the Super Bowl of sports journalism contests for work done in 2023, including top-10 placement for digital in its circulation division.

Sports editors and journalists throughout the country voted on top-10 placements in various writing, website, print newspaper and photography categories, which were split into four divisions based on newspaper circulation or digital readership size. The Tennessean is in the B Division with other metros like the Kansas City Star, Buffalo News and Indianapolis Star.

The exact order of finish in the writing and photography contests will be announced later.  The website and print contests do not rank the winners.

The Tennessean earned top-10 placement for digital website — the highest-possible honor — and had three other placements: Mike Organ and Em Poertner for top 10 in projects, a series of all-decade high school football teams, starting with the 1960s; Andrew Nelles for top 10 in action photo; and honorable mention for print portfolio, showcasing the best in daily and Sunday coverage.

The honors were among the 20 awards won by the USA TODAY Network – Tennessee.

Tennessee football beat writer Adam Sparks of Knox News placed top 10 in prestigious investigative writing, which combines all entries into one category instead of four circulation divisions. He led the Network with five wins overall.

Four of the Network’s news organizations — The Tennessean, Knox News, The Commercial Appeal and Daily News Journal — were recognized.

  • Knox News had nine placements in B Division: Brianna Paciorka for feature photo; Sparks for breaking news, investigative, explanatory, breaking news and event coverage; and Mike Wilson for beat writing and breaking news.

  • The Commercial Appeal had five placements in C Division: Jason Munz in beat writing, long feature, short feature; and Damichael Cole in beat writing and short feature.

  • The Daily News Journal had two placements in D Division: Cecil Joyce in short feature and long feature.
