A new team sits atop Gadsden area high school baseball top 5 for week of April 3

There's a new team atop the Gadsden Times baseball top 5 rankings with the teams coming back to action locally after spring break.

Here's the top-5 teams, regardless of class in the Gadsden area, for results through April 2:

SPRING SPORTS: 42 Spring high school athletes to watch around Etowah county, Gadsden area

ELI MORTON TO AUBURN: Sardis football Eli Morton takes long unexpected journey to signing PWO with Auburn

1. Etowah (13-11)

Last week: 2, 2-1 record

Why: Jameson Scissum shined for the Blue Devils last Thursday, and a spring break trip showed how lethal this team is when it's playing its best ball, the question now is if this team is starting to peak at the right time.

2. Boaz (17-5)

Last week: 1, 4-2

Why: Boaz started spring break hot with three wins but two wins in the back half put a sour taste on the week, leading to a drop to second in the rankings. The big wins over Crossville doesn't move the needle enough, but a big series looms next week.

3. Collinsville (18-4)

Last week: 4, 2-1 record

Why: The win over Sardis that came in dominating fashion combined with a tough non-area schedule helps the Panthers move up one spot in the rankings this week.

4. Sardis (14-8)

Last week: 3, 1-2 record

Why: Outside of a win over No. 1 Gulf Shores it wasn't the ideal week at the beach for the Lions, at least in the win column but some major tests are coming up to end the season, which will show what this team is made of.

5. Westbrook Christian (9-7)

Last week: 5, 1-1 record

Why: It was a split week for the Warriors during spring break, and the canceled Hokes Bluff-Westbrook game on Tuesday due to weather keeps the Warriors in the five spot for now.

Other teams considered: Cherokee County (15-8), Hokes Bluff (13-7), Southside (17-12)
