TCT sports round-up: Collins-Maxwell baseball team gets walk-off win over Ankeny Christian

This past week saw the Collins-Maxwell baseball and softball teams wrap up regular-season play and the Ballard teams both participate in three Raccoon River Conference games.

The Collins-Maxwell baseball team suffered a 16-4 loss to Class 1A No. 5 Don Bosco in five innings June 26 at Gilbertville. The Spartans came back to defeat Ankeny Christian by a 7-3 score in Collins June 28 to end the regular season with a 14-7 record.

The Spartan softball team went to 19-6 overall after edging Don Bosco by a 3-1 score at Gilbertville June 26 and crushing Lynnville-Sully, 11-0 in five innings June 27 at Sully.

The 3A No. 9 Ballard baseball team opened the week by trouncing Winterset, 15-0, in four innings June 26 at Nite Hawk Field in Slater. The Bombers followed that with a 4-1 win at Hampton-Dumont-CAL, then suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss at Gilbert before finishing the week the same way as it started, with a 15-0 home win — this time over Carroll.

The victory over Carroll put Ballard at 18-9 overall and 10-5 in the RRC.

The Ballard softball team fell to Winterset at home by an 8-2 score June 26. The Bombers bounced back with a 5-2 win at Gilbert June 28 and a 10-0 victory over Carroll in five innings June 29 at Huxley to improve to 8-12 overall and 6-9 in the RRC.

Here is what we learned from Ballard and Collins-Maxwell's high school baseball and softball performances from last week.

Caden Hasbrouck sends Spartan baseball team home happy

Caden Hasbrouck had the most memorable hit of his career to give the Collins-Maxwell baseball team a thrilling victory over Ankeny Christian.

The Spartans let a 3-1 lead get away in the sixth inning when Ankeny Christian scored twice in the top of the frame to even things up. The score remained tied going into the bottom of the seventh when Collins-Maxwell loaded the bases for Hasbrouck.

Hasbrouck stepped up to the plate, took a cut at a Brody Hoefle pitch and sent it over the fence in right field to end the game.

Hasbrouck, Jace Huntrods, Josef Dvorak and Austin Boege all had two hits for Collins-Maxwell in the win.

Hasbrouck went 2-for-4, Huntrods was 2-for-2 with a run, Dvorak 2-for-3 with a triple and a run and Boege 2-for-3 with a run. Cooper Wierson and Reed Oswalt both singled and scored, Luke Huntrods was 1-for-3, Blake Huntrods drove in a run and Caleb Dvorak scored once for the Spartans.

Caleb Dvorak was the winning pitcher in relief. He gave up two earned runs on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts in three innings. Jace Huntrods threw the first four innings and he did not allow a run on two hits and walks apiece with a pair of strikeouts.

Collins-Maxwell was hit hard by a bad third inning during its loss to Don Bosco.

The Spartans already trailed 5-1 going into the third and then the Dons erupted for eight runs to blow the game open. Wierson took the loss after surrendering four earned runs on four hits and a walk with one strikeout in two innings.

Luke Huntrods was 3-for-3 with two doubles and one run and RBI apiece for the Spartans in a losing effort. Josef Dvorak was 2-for-3 with a run, Caleb Dvorak went 2-for-3, Boege finished 1-for-1 with two RBIs, Jace Huntrods went 1-for-3 with a run, Wierson drove in a run and Blake Huntrods scored once.

Collins-Maxwell softball team survives scare from Don Bosco

The Collins-Maxwell softball team received a good fight from Don Bosco June 26, but another strong pitching performance from Erica Houge and a balanced hitting attack were enough to get the Spartans over the top.

Collins-Maxwell scored one run in both the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead. Don Bosco answered with a run in the sixth, but the Spartans came back with a big insurance run in the seventh before Houge shut down the Dons in the bottom of the inning to close out the win.

Houge fired a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts and one walk. She was also 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI at the plate.

Mary Staudt, Hannah Kimberley and Jayden Peters each added clutch hits for Collins-Maxwell. Staudt went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Kimberley was 2-for-3 with a run Peters singled, walked and scored a run.

Cypress Erickson added a walk and a run against the Dons.

The Spartans had little trouble putting away Lynnville-Sully June 27.

Collins-Maxwell used a big third inning to ground the Hawks. The Spartans scored eight times in the third to take a 10-0 lead and put the game away.

Houge was 3-for-3 with a double, home run and five RBIs on offense and she fired a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts and one walk as the winning pitcher. Staudt went 2-for-3 with two runs and RBIs apiece, Vivian Kaher 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece, Kimberley 1-for-3 with a run and Erickson 1-for-2 with two walks, two runs and a steal.

Owen Greco, Miles Mudd get shutout wins for Ballard baseball team

Owen Greco and Miles Mudd both threw strong games to help Ballard roll to its 15-0 wins over Winterset and Carroll last week.

Greco only gave up three hits and he struck out seven batters with no walks going all four innings during the victory over Winterset to start the week. Jaden Peasley led Ballard offensively by going 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs and three RBIs.

Jacob Luster was 2-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece and Eli Rouse doubled and scored against Winterset. Zach Bradfield doubled and drove in two runs and Nicolas Schonhorst singled and scored.

Mudd held Carroll to two hits and he struck out four with no walks in four innings. The Bombers scored three runs in each of the first two innings to give him more than enough run support and then added four in the third and five in the fourth to end the game early.

Mudd also doubled twice and drove in two runs on offense. Rouse was 2-for-2 with a double, walk and three runs and Bradfield and Cole Heinen chipped in two RBIs apiece versus the Tigers.

In the victory over Hampton-Dumont-CAL the Bombers took a 2-0 lead after three innings. They gave up a run in the fourth and then answered with two more scores in the fifth.

Peasley went the distance and gave up just two hits with four strikeouts and walks apiece as the winning pitcher. He also hit a solo home run at the plate.

Luster was 2-for-3 with a run and Trent Payne doubled and scored versus the Bulldogs.

In the loss to Gilbert Rouse threw a brilliant game. But the Tigers broke through with the only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh to come out on top.

Rouse gave up three hits and four walks with six strikeouts in the loss. Luster, Schonhorst and Greco each singled once for Ballard's only hits off Gilbert pitcher Tomm McGuire.

Brooklyn Baumgardner, Sam Vetter lead Ballard softball past Gilbert

A strong all-around game from Brooklyn Baumgardner and a big night with the bat from Sam Vetter helped the Ballard softball team get past Gilbert June 28 at Gilbert.

The Bombers broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the fourth inning. Then they added another in the fifth and Baumgardner shut Gilbert down over the final five innings to sew up the victory.

Baumgardner fired a two-hitter with four walks and one strikeout in seven innings as the winning pitcher. She was also 2-for-4 with a double and a run on offense.

Vetter was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate against the Tigers. She doubled twice and had one run and RBI apiece.

Madeline Schonhorst was 2-for-3, Avery Phillips 2-for-4 with an RBI, Halle Gardner 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece, Kenna Zimmerman 1-for-3 with an RBI and Maggie Mortensen 1-for-3 with a run for the Bombers.

Ballard scored at least two runs in each of the first four innings then added a run in the fifth to end the game early during its victory over Carroll June 29.

Mortensen was 3-for-3 with two runs and RBIs apiece, Jada Lande 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI, Larson 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs and Schonhorst 2-for-4 with two runs against Carroll. Gardner was 1-for-1 with one run and two RBIs, Baumgardner singled and drove in a run and Kahra Lewis singled and scored for the Bombers.

Baumgardner got the win over Carroll after going all five innings and throwing a five-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and two walks.

A tough second inning doomed Ballard during its loss to Winterset at the start of the week.

The Bombers gave up six runs in the second to fall behind 7-2. They were unable to score the rest of the way to allow the Huskies to coast to the win.

Schonhorst went 2-for-4 with a double and a run, Larson singled and scored, Vetter singled and drove in a run and Baumgardner and Lande each had a single against Winterset. Baumgardner took the loss after giving up seven earned runs on eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts in seven innings.
