TCPalm Winter All-Area: Meet the area's top stars in girls soccer from the 2023-24 season

The TCPalm Winter All-Area season has finally arrived as the Treasure Coast’s top athletes and coaches from girls weightlifting, wrestling and more will be honored throughout the week.

Today, we take a look at our winners in girls soccer.

For the second year in a row, Treasure Coast High was the last team from the Treasure Coast standing as the Titans advanced to regional semifinals. Meanwhile, Martin County was the last area team to suffer a loss. The Tigers were unbeaten through the first 15 games of the season and weren’t defeated until the district finals.

Both of the squads are featured with our superlative winners.

Here are this season’s Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, All-Area First Team and players who received Honorable Mention. Selections were made by the TCPalm sports staff based on coach nominations, total stats, average stats, accolades and overall team success.

Player of the Year

Dakota Moberg, Martin County

Amongst an uber-talented group of talented goalkeepers, the Tigers senior stands above them all. And to use a hockey phrase, she stood on her head. Opposing teams were greeted with a brick wall at the net as Moberg finished with 101 saves in 15 appearances. The team as a whole finished with 11 shutouts.

Coach of the Year

Kyle Costagan, Treasure Coast

Costagan repeated as Coach of the Year after guiding the Titans through a brutal slate of games and into the state postseason. Treasure Coast had an FHSAA strength-of-schedule of 7.65, which was second to Vero Beach (9.36) for toughest in the area. The Titans were the only area team to advance beyond the regional quarterfinals after they captured an opening-round road win at Harmony.

All-Area First Team

Catalina Benavente, South Fork

Year: Junior

Highlights: The Bulldog junior captain is a powerful, aggressive player equipped with skills to control the ball under heavy pressure. Committed to play at the North Carolina-Greensboro, Benavente was often sent to disrupt any push in the middle of the field. “She is one of the reasons that our team was so successful in tougher matches,” South Fork head coach Tony Iannitti said of Benavente, who posted two goals and two assists.

Mia Calderon, Martin County

Year: Senior

Highlights: Calderon has been named to the All-Area First-Team selection during each of her four seasons. She led the Tigers in assists in her prior three seasons. While her facilitating slightly went down (9 A - second on the team), her scoring went up as she knocked in a career-high and team-best 13 goals.

Angelina Carreno, Treasure Coast

Year: Junior

Highlights: Described by head coach Kyle Costigan as the “organizer” of the defense and the “leader” of the backfield, the junior captain was critical to the Titans five shutouts through 2023-24.

Jacey Lane, Lincoln Park Academy

Year: Junior

Highlights: Leading the Greyhounds to their second-straight winning campaign, Lane was lethal with the ball at the feet. She compiled 66 points through 30 goals and six assists. The junior more than doubled the next closest LPA player in points and was responsible for 44 percent of the team’s goals this season.

Dakota Moberg, Martin County

Year: Senior

Highlights: Moberg is the first Tigers player to take TCPalm POY honors since Peyton Fitzherbert in 2021.

Makena Meyer, South Fork

Year: Senior

Highlights: The end of Meyer’s memorable four-year career with the Bulldogs was filled with numerous clutch moments. Seven of the team’s nine victories featured a game-winning goal from the senior striker. Finishing with 25 goals and 10 assists, Meyer is set to play soccer collegiate at North Carolina Wesleyan University.

Deanna Romero, Treasure Coast

Year: Sophomore

Highlights: Through her first two seasons, the striker has been the Titans’ best offensive player. She led the team in points as a freshman and did so again as a sophomore, scoring 17 goals and three assists in 17 games.

Keira Smylie, Master’s Academy

Year: Sophomore

Highlights: No player in the area scored more and piled up more points than the sophomore star. Leading the Patriots to a 13-7-1 record, Smylie lit up the scoreboard at a dizzying pace, finishing with 35 goals to go with five assists. Her best showing came in a four-goal, two-assist performance on Nov. 14 at John Carroll.

Tiana Trahan, Martin County

Year: Senior

Highlights: A key cog to a veteran backline, Trahan was a defensive standout in front of Moberg. Aside from the Tigers’ two defeats to West Boca Raton to end the season, the senior captain helped the team relinquish just seven goals as part of an undefeated 14-game stretch to start the season. Offensively, Trahan contributed three goals and three assists.

Victoria Valles, Treasure Coast

Year: Junior

Highlights: A team captain out of the center midfielder, Valles paced the team with seven assists and was second on the squad in scoring (7). She was also responsible for the Titans’ biggest goal of the season. The junior put in the game-winning score in the team’s regional quarterfinal at Harmony..

Giovanna Waksman, Pine School

Year: Freshman

Highlights: How many goals can you score in eight games? Well, if you are last year’s POY, the answer is plenty. Waksman poured in 21 goals, 15 of which coming against area teams. Her freshman campaign came to a close just prior to the district tournament as she was selected to play for the under-17 Brazil National Team.
