Taylor Lewan's live reaction to Mike Vrabel firing by Titans: 'They just made a big mistake'

Former Tennessee Titans offensive lineman Taylor Lewan learned about Mike Vrabel's firing while on live with "The Rich Eisen Show" on Tuesday.

Eisen, an NFL Network host who has an independent radio and television show each weekday, informed Lewan about Vrabel's firing while the two were talking about their alma mater Michigan's national championship win from the previous day.

After a few moments of absorbing the news, Lewan criticized the move.

"I love (Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk), and I love that franchise. I think they made a mistake," Lewan said. "I think they just made a big mistake. Because Vrabel is going to be just fine."

Two days ago, Lewan and Vrabel, along with former Titans linebacker and Lewan's podcast co-host Will Compton, embraced before the Titans' win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the season finale at Nissan Stadium. Lewan and Vrabel have had a good relationship since Vrabel became his coach in 2018, with Vrabel appearing on Lewan and Compton's "Bussin' With the Boys" podcast on multiple occasions.

Vrabel, with Lewan at left tackle, led the Titans to three straight postseason appearances from 2019 to 2021, including an AFC Championship Game appearance in 2019. But the Titans have missed the postseason the past two seasons, ending 2022 with a seven-game losing streak (with Lewan released after the season) and going 6-11 this season.

Lewan doesn't place the blame of the franchise's recent struggles in Vrabel's lap.

"As the season was unfolding, to me it was very clear that Vrabes was not the problem," Lewan said. "It wasn't a team that was filled with enough talent to be truly competitive in the NFL at that point. That's just the reality of the situation. You can point a lot of fingers, but I didn't think the finger you could truly point at was Vrabel."
