Taurean Prince agrees to contract extension with Timberwolves

Finding star talent is the most important part of building a title contender in the NBA. For the Timberwolves, guys like Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns check that box.

Finding veteran leaders is the next step in that equation. For the Timberwolves, guys like Taurean Prince fill that void.

That explains why the Timberwolves are making sure the 28-year-old forward sticks around next season. On Tuesday night, Prince agreed to a two-year, $16 million contract extension, according to multiple reports. He had previously told reporters that he would be open to coming back if the opportunity presented itself.

A journeyman of sorts, Prince has played for a handful of teams since being drafted with the No. 12 pick in the 2016 NBA draft. He started his career with the Atlanta Hawks, spent time with the Brooklyn Nets and played for the Cleveland Cavaliers before landing with the Timberwolves via trade.

In a bench role for the Timberwolves last season, Prince averaged 7.3 points and 2.5 rebounds across 69 games, while shooting 45.4 percent from the field and 37.6 percent from long range.

His ability to space the floor, coupled with his skills as a defender on the perimeter, make him a valuable player for a team trying to take the next step. Hence why the Timberwolves put the finishing touches on Prince’s contract extension before free agency opens up on Thursday night.
