Who is the Taunton Daily Gazette Athlete of the Week for Jan. 1-6?

TAUNTON— It's been an exciting start to 2024 for Greater Taunton area high school sports.

Taunton girls basketball is off to its best start in over 15 years while Taunton hockey earned its first win over King Philip since joining the Hockomock League and first overall against the Warriors in 30 years. Bridgewater-Raynham girls basketball looks strong once again, as do Taunton and Bridgewater-Raynham wrestling, while other programs across the area look set to make tournament pushes down the line as well.

The Taunton Daily Gazette Athlete of the Week for Dec. 11-17 is Dighton-Rehoboth boys indoor track's Matt Suprenard, receiving 41% of the vote. Bridgewater-Raynham boys indoor track's Joey Brand came in second with 18% while Bridgewater-Raynham boys swimming's Andy Martin received 9% to finish third.

As for the Taunton Daily Gazette Players of the Preseason, Dighton-Rehoboth's Aiden Marando was voted Boys Basketball Player of the Preseason with 47% of the vote while Taunton's Troy Santos came in second with 37% and Dighton-Rehoboth's Dylan Andreozzi had 7% to finish third. Taunton's Jillian Doherty was voted Girls Basketball Player of the Preseason with 27% of the vote, defeating Bristol-Plymouth's Amanda Beatrice by just two votes while Bristol-Plymouth's Emma Ericson had 19% to finish third. Southeastern/Bristol-Plymouth's Andrew Flanagan was voted the Hockey Player of the Preseason with 47% while Taunton's Cayden Clancy came in second with 29% and Southeastern/Bristol-Plymouth's Cam Wilbur had 6% to finish third.

Jordan Dietz, Dighton-Rehoboth

Dietz had 17 points against Old Rochester.

Girls Basketball

Taryn Campbell, Taunton

Campbell had 20 points against Franklin.

Reese Bartlett, Bridgewater-Raynham

Bartlett had 19 points, seven assists and five rebounds against New Bedford.

Emma Ericson, Bristol-Plymouth

Ericson had 12 points against Old Colony.

Megan Keane, Dighton-Rehoboth

Keane had nine points against Bourne.

Boys Hockey

Jonathan McGrath, Taunton

McGrath had two goals against King Philip.

Sean Nasiff, Bridgewater-Raynham

Nasiff had a goal against Whitman-Hanson.

Thomas Leger, Southeastern/Bristol-Plymouth

Leger had a pair of goals against Upper Cape Tech.

Brady Fitzpatrick, Dighton-Rehoboth/Seekonk

Fitzpatrick had a goal and an assist against Apponequet.

Girls Hockey

Riley Bain, West Bridgewater/East Bridgewater/Bridgewater-Raynham/Bristol-Plymouth

Bain was named the Wild Vikings' player of the game against Nauset/Monomoy.

Boys Swimming

Harrison Layden, Taunton

Layden finished third in both the 200 yard freestyle and 100 yard butterfly against Attleboro.

Girls Swimming

Abigail Fernandes, Taunton

Fernandes won the 200 yard individual medley and finished second in the 500 yard freestyle against Attleboro.

Wrestling

Kingston DaCosta, Taunton

DaCosta won all three of his respective matches during a quad meet against Haverhill, Lincoln (R.I.) and Billerica.

Brent von Magnus, Bridgewater-Raynham

von Magnus defeated Dalvin Moreira by fall in 0:20 during a dual meet against Brockton.

Andrew Daley, Bristol-Plymouth

Daley defeated Layne Morrisey 15-0 during a dual meet against South Shore Tech.

Luis Garcia, Bristol Aggie/Dighton-Rehoboth

Garcia won the 113 lb. weight class at the Bruce Rich Invitational at Chelmsford High School.
