Tantasqua, Wachusett advance to state golf championships; Tantasqua sweeps SWCL XC titles

Boys' golf

Division 2 West Championship: Sophomore Sam Pieczynski qualified for the state individual tournament with an 80 at Crestview Country Club and led Tantasqua (349) to a third-place finish and a berth in next week's state tournament.

Wahconah (312) took the team title, with Pope Francis (334) finishing second.

The Division 2 state championship is at 9 a.m. Monday at Thorny Lea CC in Brockton.

Division 1 West Championship: Wachusett Regional tied for second place with Minnechaug to secure a berth in next week's state championship.

The Mountaineers and Falcons, both with 331 strokes, trailed just Longmeadow (325), which was led by medalist Ryan Downes (75), the reigning Mass. Amateur champion.

The Division 1 state championship is Monday at Greathorse in Hampden, starting at 10 a.m.

Boys' cross-country

SWCL Championship: Cam Foley finished second on his own 2,9-mile course in 16:42.4, and teammates James Segatore (sixth, 17:31.9) and Avery Michalak (seventh, 17:36.5) also placed in the top 10 while leading Tantasqua (46) to the team title at Old Sturbridge Village.

Northbridge's Marcus Reilly (15:52.7) won the race by neary 50 seconds over Foley, pacing the Rams (82) to a third-place finish. Beckett Heidenthal (17:30.8) came in fourth for second-place Grafton (55).

Girls' cross-country

SWCL Championship: Ava Marcucci (22:10.3) and Audrey Papandrea (22:53.1) placed 4-5 over 2.9 miles as Tantasqua made it a varsity sweep by taking the title over Grafton (52) at Old Sturbridge Village.

The Warriors placed four in the top 10, with Paige Spooner (23:02.1) seventh and Kylie McCarthy (23:16.7) ninth.

Oxford's Cameron Davis posted an impressive victory in 19:01.9, nearly three minutes ahead of Grafton's Allie Shrayer (21:52.3) in second.
