The T&G Hometeam girls' hockey all-stars for winter 2022-23

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette, with the Central Mass High School Sports Awards program, presented by DCU – Digital Federal Credit Union, is proud to announce the nominees for girls' hockey. The winner will be announced during the live show Wednesday, June 28 at the Hanover Theatre.

During the live show, these nominees will be honored, along with the athletes of the year in 31 other sports with Athletes of the Year, Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, and a Courage Award.

Amanda Allan

Leominster, Senior, Defense

Allan, a two-year captain and student at Lunenburg, anchored the defense, which allowed just 28 goals, and contributed 5 goals and 8 assists for 13 points. Allan helped lead the Blue Devils to a Division 2 state tournament berth and a 15-5-1 record. Leominster merged with Oakmont Regional this season, and the opportunity to meet and team with new players, as well as play with her sister, Alyssa, were Allan’s most memorable moments of the season. In the fall, Allan will attend the University of Maine, where she will study animal science and pre-vet. She is the daughter of Michele and Mike Allan of Lunenburg.

Olivia Bower

Algonquin Regional, Senior, Defense

Bower, a student at Hudson, anchored the Algonquin’s defense, which allowed just 35 goals, and helped lead the Titans to the quarterfinals of the Division 2 state tournament. Bower scored a first-period power-play goal in Algonquin’s 4-3 win over Dedham in the second round. She finished the year with 7 goals and added 12 assists, and had a plus-minus of plus-27. Bower, a captain, finished her career with 12 goals and 23 assists. The Titans, who were the defending state champions, finished another outstanding season 18-4-1. Senior Night, which was a night of many emotions, was Bower’s most memorable moment of the season. In the fall, Bower will attend Assumption University to study elementary education and play ice hockey. She is the daughter of Thomas and Wendy Bower of Hudson.

Bryn Domolky

Algonquin Regional, Junior, Center

Domolky tied the single-season program record with 20 assists and helped lead the Titans to the quarterfinals of the Division 2 state tournament. Algonquin, the defending state champion, finished another outstanding season 18-4-1. Domolky, a team captain, scored eight goals and had a plus-minus of plus-23. She has 26 goals and 42 assists in her career. Her aspirations for next season include breaking the program’s assist record and helping the Titans return to TD Garden for a chance at another state title. Her most memorable moment of 2022-23 was when freshman Brenna Joyce scored the winner in double-overtime to lift the Titans past Natick, 2-1, in the first round of the state tourney. Domolky is the daughter of Erik and Beth Domolky of Southborough.

Emily Johns

Algonquin, Junior, Left wing

Johns, a student at Clinton, earned her third straight T&G Super Team selection after helping the Algonquin to the quarterfinals of the Division 2 state tournament. The Titans, the defending state champions, finished another outstanding season 18-4-1. Johns scored 32 goals and added seven assists, and led Central Mass. in scoring. She had a plus-minus of plus-39. Johns was the recipient of her team’s Player of the Year award. The Titans elected her captain for 2023-24. Johns registered two hat tricks this year, and scored four goals in an early-season win over Arlington Catholic. She is the daughter of Lynne Johns of Clinton.

Kaitlin Mathews

Algonquin, Senior, Goalie

Mathews, a student at Nashoba Regional, had a 1.49 goals against average and 94% save percentage to lead Algonquin to the quarterfinals of the Division 2 state tournament. The Titans, the defending state champions, finished another outstanding season 18-4-1. Mathews, a captain, posted six shutouts. In a 2-0 win over Natick, Mathews made 29 saves and collected her first career assist in the third period. Algonquin’s Senior Night game was Mathews’ most memorable moment of the season. Mathews is undecided on her college choice, but plans to study health sciences and become a physical therapist. She is the daughter of Timothy and Sarah Mathews of Stow.

Yasmine McKenzie

Shrewsbury, Sophomore, Defense

McKenzie, a student at Wachusett Regional, scored 9 goals and added 18 assists to rank among the scoring leaders and help Shrewsbury to the Division 1 state championship. Scoring in the third period to break a 1-1 tie in Shrewsbury’s 4-1 win over St. Mary’s in the final, celebrating with her teammates and seeing the excitement in the crowd was McKenzie’s most memorable moment of the season. The state title was the first for the program, and Shrewsbury finished its historic season 21-2-2. McKenzie led a defense that limited opponents to 25 goals. She hopes to play hockey at the highest level. She is the daughter of Salwa and Andrew McKenzie of Holden.

Marisa Montoya

Shrewsbury, Junior, Goalie

Montoya earned her third straight T&G Super Team honor after helping the Colonials to their first state championship. Montoya made 23 saves in the Colonials 4-1 win over St. Mary’s in the Division 1 final. Montoya finished the season with a .936 save percentage and a 1.02 goals against average to lead Shrewsbury to a 21-2-2 record. She posted seven shutouts and she holds the Shrewsbury career record for shutouts. The Colonials elected Montoya captain for the 2023-24 season. She is the daughter of Heather Montoya of Shrewsbury.

Maddie Mrva

Shrewsbury, Senior, Defense

Mrva earned her second T&G Super Team honor for ice hockey, and fifth selection overall. She was a two-time Super Teamer in field hockey, and earned the accolade for lacrosse last spring. In addition to anchoring Shrewsbury’s defense, Mrva scored 15 goals and added 13 assists to help lead the Colonials to the Division 1 state title. Shrewsbury’s 4-1 win over St. Mary’s in the final was Mrva’s most memorable moment of the season. She scored an unassisted goal in the third period to help the program to its first state championship. Mrva was a captain and her team’s MVP. In the fall, she will attend Bowdoin College, where she will play field hockey and study economics and environmental science. She is the daughter of Carrie and Matt Mrva of Shrewsbury.

Mia Ryder

Shrewsbury, Sophomore, Right wing

Ryder scored eight goals and added 15 assists to help the Colonials to the first state championship in program history. Shrewsbury beat St. Mary’s, 4-1, in the Division 1 final at TD Garden. Sharing that accomplishment with her older sister, Taylor, who is also a T&G Super Team selection, and holding the state championship trophy, were Ryder’s most memorable moments of the season. Shrewsbury finished its remarkable run 21-2-2. Scoring Shrewsbury’s first goal in the 4-3 semifinal win over Notre Dame Hingham, and beating Hingham in double overtime in the quarterfinals were among Ryder’s other favorite highlights. She is the daughter of Paula and Jason Ryder of Shrewsbury.

Taylor Ryder

Shrewsbury, Senior, Center

Ryder earned her second T&G Super Team selection and helped the Colonials to the Division 1 state championship. Coming back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Notre Dame Hingham in the semifinals, and getting the fan section going, was Ryder’s most memorable moment of the season. The Colonials beat St. Mary’s, 4-1, in the final to capture the program’s first state title. Ryder had a goal and an assist. Shrewsbury finished its historic season 21-2-2. Ryder’s sister, Mia, joined her on the Super Team. Ryder, a captain, scored 13 goals and added 18 assists to rank among the scoring leaders in Central Mass. In the fall, she will attend the University of Mississippi, where she will study journalism and new media studies. She hopes to be a sideline reporter for ESPN. She is the daughter of Jason and Paula Ryder of Shrewsbury.

Rachel Simkewicz

Leominster, Sophomore, Forward

Simkewicz, who was among the Oakmont Regional students to join Leominster’s co-op this season, earned her second T&G Super Team honor. All the new players coming together to finish 15-5-1 and earn a berth in the Division 2 state tournament was the most memorable moment of the season for Simkewicz. She scored 14 goals and added 10 assists to rank among the leaders in Central Mass. She scored five goals in a win over Concord-Carlisle. Simkewicz hopes to study sports medicine and play ice hockey in college. She is the daughter of Andrew and Lauren Simkewicz of Westminster.

Olivia Viens

Auburn, Sophomore, Right wing/center

Viens, a student at Grafton, scored 14 goals and added 17 assists to rank among the leading scorers in Central Mass., and help Auburn to a berth in the Division 1 state tournament. Finding out that the Rockets qualified for the tourney was the most memorable moment of the season for Viens. She had a four-goal, four-assist performance in an early-season win over Ursuline, and she scored a pair of goals in a late-season win over Smithfield (R.I.). Viens has 51 points in her career. She hopes to study education and play ice hockey in college. She is the daughter of Greta and Dominic Viens of North Grafton.
