Suspended Alabama football DB Tony Mitchell receives probation from drug charge

Alabama football's Tony Mitchell received three years of probation Wednesday and was ordered to pay court fees of $1,560 and serve 100 hours of community service on a recent drug charge, according to court records.

The freshman defensive back was arrested March 15 in Holmes County, Florida, in the Florida Panhandle, after evading police at speeds over 141 miles per hour as police discontinued pursuit, according to a Holmes County Sheriff's Office arrest report. Mitchell was charged with marijuana possession with intent to sell and/or deliver. Police also confiscated scales and what they described as a large amount of cash.

A passenger in Mitchell's vehicle, Christopher Lewis, was arrested on the same charge as well as for carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. A deputy initially attempted to pull over Mitchell, driving a black Dodge Challenger, after he was clocked at 78 mph in a 55-mph speed zone. The deputy later saw the Challenger again and Mitchell pulled over, per the report.

UA coach Nick Saban announced on March 20 that Mitchell had been suspended.

"Tony Mitchell has been suspended from the team and all team activities until we get more information about the situation and what his legal circumstance is," Saban said at the time.

On Tuesday, at the Nick's Kids Foundation golf tournament in Vestavia Hills, Saban said there was no change or update on Mitchell's status. He was part of Alabama's No. 1-ranked 2023 signing class and enrolled at UA for the spring term.
