Super Bowl halftime performer The Weeknd promises show will be family-friendly
Profanity, the middle finger, sexualized content, Prince’s guitar and, yes, the wardrobe malfunction heard ‘round the world.
The Super Bowl halftime show is no stranger to controversies large and small when it comes to the content of its show. Its headliner this year, The Weeknd, promised Thursday that the Super Bowl LV show will be family-friendly.
Via USA Today:
“For sure, I definitely want to be respectful to the viewers at home,” he said. “I will still incorporate some of the storyline. It’s a very cohesive story I’ve been telling throughout this era and throughout this year.
"So the story will continue, but definitely we’ll keep it PG for the families.”
The Weeknd hasn’t been averse to more adult content in the past, most notably his bloodied appearance in the “Blinding Lights” music video and decking himself out in bandages in several public appearances, which he said was a statement about the superficial culture and plastic surgery in Hollywood.
While the multi-platinum artist said he would keep things PG, he did hint that the show may feature a certain pirate ship in the end zone of Raymond James Stadium:
“That ship is so iconic. We are incorporating it a little bit but I don’t want to say much more.”
Given that The Weeknd has reportedly spent $7 million of his own money to ensure a good show, this should all add up to a show that is at least interesting.
