SUNY Oneonta sweeps Hartwick in hoops openers

Nov. 8—Cross-street rivals SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick opened their respective women's basketball seasons Wednesday as the Red Dragons earned a 65-55 victory at home.

Hartwick held a slim 14-13 lead after one quarter but were held to just eight points in the second as Oneonta led the rest of the way.

Amanda Zuntag was the game's leading scorer with 24 points for the Red Dragons. She added seven rebounds in the win.

Elsewhere for Oneonta, Nadia Brown and Molly Stephens each scored nine points while Jenna Harclerode pulled down 11 rebounds.

Isabella Astorino led Hartwick with 16 points, Sareena DiCerbo had 13 points and nine rebounds and Bree Fargnoli finished with 10 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Oneonta will host Skidmore next Tuesday while Hartwick will be at Muhlenberg College Saturday.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

SUNY Oneonta 91, Hartwick 53

The Red Dragons rolled to a 91-53 victory in their season opener at home against the Hawks.

Javen Flowers-Smith led the way with 23 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Xavier Hill, meanwhile, scored 15 points to go with five rebounds.

In all, 14 different Oneonta players scored points in the win.

The Red Dragons shot 9-of-21 (43%) from three-point range while holding Hartwick to 33% shooting from the field.

Jeremiah Boateng and Jaden Carter each scored seven points to lead the Hawks.

Oneonta will host the Michael A. Freilich Classic Saturday while Hartwick will visit SUNY Cobleskill the same day.

FIELD HOCKEY

The Hartwick field hockey team's season came to an end Wednesday as the Hawks fell to 16th-ranked Rowan University 5-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Glassboro, N.J.

Rowan opened the scoring in the ninth minute and would take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Rowan would score three more times in a 16-minute span in the second half to seal the victory.

The Hawks were only able to manage two shots on goal in the loss.

Goalie Ashley Luppens finished the game with eight saves.

Hartwick ends the season as the Empire 8 champions with an overall record of 12-6.
