Sturgis wrestlers win twice at Berrien Springs

BERRIEN SPRINGS — The Sturgis wrestling team hit the road on Wednesday and won a pair of matchups.

The Trojans beat Buchanan 49-27 and knocked off the host Shamrocks as well, 57-24. Sturgis coach Brad Barkby said it was a great night for wrestling and each of the Sturgis wrestlers worked hard and pushed a mean pace.

Tisdel secures spot at MHSAA state finals in 50 free

Several Sturgis grapplers were 2-0 on the evening. Finishing with perfect nights were Jouse Galvan (106), Easton Barkby (113), Lola Barkby (120), Jacob Lewis (126), Kaiden Waldron (132), Juan Pablo Soto (144) and Angel Alvarez (150).

Bronson continues to impress

The Bronson wrestling team had a successful weekend. The Vikings met up with White Pigeon last Friday for a make-up dual matchup and picked up a 41-26 victory.

White Pigeon won the opener as Drew Johnson beat Brier Green by technical fall.

Bronson then went on to win the next nine bouts. Owen Kimmons won by pin at 126, Logan Long (132) then won by major decision. Caleb Harvey (138) won by decision, Collin York (144) won by major decision and then Gabe Erwin (150) picked up a decision victory as well. Layne Knisely (157) and Mason Lindsey (165) won by pinfall, then Carson Norton (175) won by decision. Conner Harvey (190) won by pinfall as well.

White Pigeon earned a win by Seth Miller (215) over Jacob Britten, 4-3. Chaz Underwood (285) then won before David Lane (106) and Mazzy Lambert (113) picked up victories as well for White Pigeon.

Bronson then took part in the McGinnis-Evans Invitational held on Saturday in Battle Creek. The Vikings earned fourth place overall with 145.5 total points.

On the day, Owen Kimmons earned his 100th career victory for the Vikings. Mason Lindsey was voted as the MVP of the tournament as well for the upper weight classes (150-285).

Additionally, Bronson had three girls wrestle on Friday night at the Altman Invitational in St. Joseph. Mackenna Webster wrestled to first place while Kailynn Scare placed third and Zoay Herbert came in fourth.

Sturgis cheers to third place at conference

Layne Knisely, Lindsey and Jacob Britten each wrestled to first place in their weight classes. Gabe Erwin finished second overall while Carson Norton was fifth, Connor Harvey finished sixth.

Britten also earned his 100th pin of his career earlier in the week.

Mendon wins twice

The Mendon wrestling team won a pair of matches on Wednesday, beating both Bangor (39-36) and Eau Claire (48-31).

Winning for the Hornets against Eau Claire were Ash Staffen (106), Keaton Weeks (113), Braxten Haigh (120), Zak Iobe (144), Andrew McClain (150), Grant Crotser (165), Marcus Hodges (175) and Talan Buchanan (285).

Winning for the Hornets against Bangor were Staffen, Weeks, Xavian Zinsmaster (126), Jerry Batten (132), Keegan Smith (157), Hodges and JT Lux (190).

White Pigeon picks up pair of wins

The White Pigeon wrestling team won twice on Wednesday, beating Hartford (54-21) and Comstock (78-6).

Jesse Fielis won the opening bout for the Chiefs against Hartford (138). Also winning for White Pigeon in the match were Luke Hinkson (144), Evan Rudloff (150), Jayden Zambreno (157), Tiago Andrande (165), Caleb Lane (175), Seth Miller (215), Chaz Underwood (285), David Lane (106), Mazzy Lambert (113), Drew Johnson (120), Hunter Pant (126) and Maddix Jancasz at 132.

Picking up victories for the Chiefs against Hartford were Hinkson, Rudloff, Caleb Lane, Miller, Underwood, David Lane, Lambert, Pant and Fielis.
