Sturgis girls bowl to regional championship

KALAMAZOO - For the first time in school history, the Sturgis girls won a regional bowling championship on Friday.

It came at Continental Lanes in Kalamazoo. There, the Lady Trojans took care of business and ran away with a comfortable victory for the school's first regional girls title. The boys team did not qualify for the state finals.

Three Chiefs finish in double figures for road win at Sturgis

"Kids bowled great today. Just so very proud of the effort at the end of the day by both squads," Sturgis coach Scott Spahr said. "Showing the mental strength a season filled with great qualifying positions and a ton of match play experience."

The Lady Trojans knocked down 2,916 total pins on the day. They shot baker games of 176, 125, 163, 169, 143, 176, 180 and 129.

Singles games saw Sturgis post scores of 818 and 837.

Finishing in second place and also qualifying for state was Marshall.

For the boys, Sturgis was 10 pins short of qualifying for the state finals. They knocked down 3,224 total pins in the eight baker and two single games.

Sturgis shot games of 187, 163, 141, 137, 148, 190, 184 and 156 plus singles games of 934 and 984.

"Coming from a COVID year that saw our schedule be trimmed way back, especially in the tournament department (one that season) to the group responding to rolling 16 of them a year since," Spahr said. "Cannot state the mental toughness enough. Super, super proud of what they have done. And yet, we are not done. On to doing our best to bring the big mitten home next week."

Sturgis was led by Caleb Henson-Bohlen with games of 201 and 223 for a 424 series. Lane Malone shot games of 201 and 219 for a 420, Andrew Matz added games of 193 and 190 for 383. Josh Groff shot 168-190 (358) and Brayden Smoker added games of 171 and 162 (333).
