Studs and Duds from Seattle’s 37-31 win vs. Detroit

For the first time in 2023, the Seattle Seahawks are in the win column. They bounced back in a major way from their Week 1 trouncing with an explosive 37-31 overtime win on Sunday.

For a second straight season, the Seahawks leave Ford Field with another shootout win. Only this time, a far more dramatic finish.

Seattle avoided the dreaded 0-2 start and are back on track, at least for now. Here are the biggest Studs and Duds from their Week 2 showdown:

No. 1 Stud - Tre Brown

When you make the cover photo, it’s safe to say you are going to end up as the No. 1 Stud for the week. Cornerback Tre Brown had the best performance of any Seahawks defensive back against the Lions. Brown, who has battled injuries thus far in his career, showed why Seattle is still in love with his talent.

Brown finished the day with four total tackles, a sack, a tackle for a loss, a forced fumble, and two pass defenses… one of which was this:

Not a bad way to get your first career interception.

No. 2 Stud - Kenneth Walker III

Seattle’s second year running back had a tough assignment on Sunday. Having to operate behind a makeshift offensive line sans its two starting tackles is not an ideal situation, but Kenneth Walker III did his best.

The Michigan State standout only had 43 yards on 17 carries, but found the end zone twice. Stats won’t show how many Lions defenders living in the backfield he made miss, but he was a slippery one to bring down.

When the Seahawks can finally get Walker and the ground game running smoothly, this offense is going to be difficult to get off the field.

No. 1 Dud - Jason Myers

It’s been a rough start to the season for Seattle’s Pro Bowl kicker. Last year, Myers missed only three kicks. Through two games, Myers has matched this total. By no means are 45 or 56-yard field goals automatic in this league, but in a dome for a kicker like Myers should be more than makeable.

Myers did chip in a 25-yarder in the third quarter, but with the game tied at 31-31, it was hard to not think about the six points he left on the field.

I’m not selling my stock on Myers just yet, but these early struggles are concerning to say the least.

No. 2 Dud - Overall defensive performance

This is a weirder one to breakdown. Seattle’s defense had strong individual performances. The aforementioned Tre Brown was magnificent. Devon Witherspoon had a great rookie debut. Uchenna Nwosu forced a fumble to start the second half. Two 4th down stops is nothing to balk at.

But when judging the overall performance as a unit, Seattle’s defense is still leaving plenty to be desired. For a second straight week, the Seahawks were pushed over the field. The pass rush showed life in the second half, but not enough to make Lions quarterback Jared Goff uncomfortable, who had little difficulty throwing for 323 yards on 28-of-35 completions.

Through two weeks the Seahawks have allowed 657 yards through the air while only defending four passes and logging two sacks. So far, Seattle has struggled to provide resistance to opposing offenses.

No. 3 Stud - Tyler Lockett

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett (16) makes a catch for a touchdown against <a class="link " href="https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/detroit/" data-i13n="sec:content-canvas;subsec:anchor_text;elm:context_link" data-ylk="slk:Detroit Lions;sec:content-canvas;subsec:anchor_text;elm:context_link;itc:0">Detroit Lions</a> safety <a class="link " href="https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/40067" data-i13n="sec:content-canvas;subsec:anchor_text;elm:context_link" data-ylk="slk:Brian Branch;sec:content-canvas;subsec:anchor_text;elm:context_link;itc:0">Brian Branch</a> (32) during overtime at Ford Field in Detroit on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2023.

It seems every year we have to have the conversation of “Tyler Lockett does not get the recognition he deserves.” So, let’s start the 2023 version of this:

Tyler Lockett really does not get the recognition he deserves.

All Lockett has done for the Seahawks is produce and come up in big moments. It’s easy to be overshadowed by the star power of DK Metcalf or focus on Seattle’s ground game, but when push comes to shove, there seems to be one player Seahawks quarterbacks look for.

On Sunday, Lockett reminded folks why he should be considered the true No. 1 receiver in Seattle’s offense. Lockett caught eight of ten passes thrown his way for 59 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime.

12’s, appreciate Lockett while he’s here. We’re witnessing an all time Seahawks legend as he’s still playing.
