Steve Sarkisian speaks on past QB development, confident in Quinn Ewers
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has made his career off of developing quarterbacks. His resume of sending quarterbacks for the NFL is quite impressive.
Sarkisian spearheaded the 2000s USC dynasty as the offensive coordinator for Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart and Mark Sanchez. He then sent Jake Locker to the pros during his first head coaching job at Washington.
More recently, during his stint at Alabama, Sark called plays for first-rounders Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones, helping him land the Texas gig.
Entering year three as the Longhorns head man, Sarkisian is tasked with adding another name to his quarterback list.
Former five-star Quinn Ewers has all the arm talent in the world. An up-and-down redshirt freshman campaign showed glimpses of greatness but was riddled with inconsistency.
Ewers and Sarkisian have a critical offseason in front of them. The development of the Longhorns starter will be the key to a successful season in 2023.

Sarkisian's track record
“I think our track record speaks for itself. I think in the last 20 years, I’ve had five quarterbacks get drafted in the top 10 picks of the NFL draft. It’s a little bit attractive to come play in our system, to get developed, come to the University of Texas and get a world-class education, live in the city of Austin, and be on the face of, in my opinion, the best brand in all of sports.”
Expectations in the system
“Generally in our system in year two is when you make those strides and become that elite player. I saw it with Carson Palmer. In year two, he wins the Heisman trophy and ends up the first pick in the draft. I saw it in Matt Leinart. I saw it in Jake Locker, and he ended up being the 10th pick in the draft.”
The loss of two primary leaders
“We lost a couple of really good leaders in Roschon Johnson and Bijan Robinson last year off our offense, but we didn’t lose a whole lot more. We’re returning 10 starters. So (it’s) him stepping into the fold and being that guy.”
