Stephanie Soares joins Iowa State women's basketball team staff as graduate assistant

Stephanie Soares’ college basketball career at Iowa State isn’t completely over after all.

Iowa State announced Friday that Soares will be part of Cyclones coach Bill Fennelly’s 2023-24 staff as a graduate assistant.

“We are excited that Stephanie will continue to be with our program as a graduate assistant,” Fennelly said in a statement announcing the move. “She makes our program better in every way. This will also allow her to complete her rehab so she is ready to begin her professional career.”

Stephanie Soares, a first round pick in this year's WNBA Draft, will be a graduate assistant for the Iowa State women's basketball team this season.

Soares played just 13 games at Iowa State and averaged 14.4 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game before suffering a torn ACL. The injury forced her to miss the remainder of the season. Soares applied for a medical redshirt, but it was denied by the NCAA.

Soares entered the WNBA Draft and was selected by the Washington Mystics with the fourth overall pick before being traded to the Dallas Wings. Soares was already scheduled to stay at Iowa State during her first pro season to finish her rehab and head to Dallas for updates periodically.

She is pursuing her master’s degree in family and consumer sciences. She already received her bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and physical education from The Master’s University, an NAIA program in California, before transferring to Iowa State to finish her college playing career.
