Steelers will start Russell Wilson in 2024 after trading Kenny Pickett
When the Pittsburgh Steelers signed quarterback Russell Wilson, the initial expectation was that he would compete with Kenny Pickett for the starting job this summer.
Pickett apparently wasn’t very enthused about that, so Pittsburgh has agreed to trade the QB and a fourth-round draft pick to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for third- and seventh-round picks.
Now, instead of getting a chance to compete with Wilson, Pickett will serve as Jalen Hurts’ backup in Philadelphia.
Meanwhile, Wilson is now left without competition, making him the Steelers’ starting quarterback by default going into the summer. The 35-year-old quarterback officially signed his one-year contract on Friday.
Pittsburgh will get a bargain in 2024 because the Broncos are still paying $37.79 million of the QB’s salary, allowing the Steelers to pay him the league minimum ($1.21 million).
Denver has quickly moved on, already giving away Wilson’s old jersey number, but the team is still seeking a replacement. The list of free agent quarterbacks available is shrinking every day, but the Broncos also hold the 12th overall pick in this year’s draft.
Signing and/or drafting a QB remains in play for Denver, and Jarrett Stidham is also under contract for one more year. Regardless of who lines up under center for the Broncos in 2024, their game against the Steelers will be must-watch television when Wilson returns to Denver this fall.
