State tennis: Holland Christian finishes sixth, West Ottawa 16th

ANN ARBOR - The Holland Christian girls tennis team finished tied for sixth at the Division 3 state tournament on Friday and Saturday at the University of Michigan.

The Maroons scored 11 points in the tournament. Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood won the title with 33, edging Detroit Country Day (31).

"Our goal is to make it in the top 10, we were ranked No. 7 going into state and ended up tying for sixth," Holland Christian coach Lynn Bender said.

At No. 4 singles, Gabi Rooks reached the state semifinals. She had a first-round bye, defeated Marian's Allegra Curtis 6-1, 7-5 and then Notre Dame Prep's Addison Bellows, 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. She lost 6-2, 6-4 to state runner-up Helen Benjamin of Detroit Country Day in the semifinals.

Bria Lampen won her first-round match 6-1, 6-1 over Flint Powers Catholic's Reagan Murton before losing to Otsego's Aly Aldrich 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.

At No. 2 singles, Eva VanKlompenberg had a bye, then lost to fourth-seed Addy Fales of Allegan, 6-3, 6-2.

At No. 3 singles, Monika Diaz lost 7-5, 6-3 to Williamston's Morgan Harkema in the first round.

In doubles, Ainsley VandenBrink and Lilly DeVries survived a first-round three-setter with a 6-7, 6-0, 6-2 win over Otsego. They then faced top seed and eventual state champion Detroit Country Day and lost 6-0, 6-2.

At No. 2, Kayla VandenBerg and Esmay Klingenberg had a bye, then defeated Stevensville Lakeshore 6-0, 6-3 in the second round. They lost 6-2, 6-1 to Grand Rapids Christian in the quarterfinals.

At No. 3 doubles, Abi Kraal and Larissa Bol reached the quarterfinals before sustaining their first loss of the season. They had a bye and defeated Grosse Ile 6-2, 6-3 before falling to Grand Rapids Christian 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

At No. 4, Cortney Leep and Nicole Genzink had a first-round bye, then defeated Armada 6-3, 6-0 before falling 6-4, 0-6, 7-5 to Marian in the quarterfinals.

Division 1

The West Ottawa girls tennis team scored seven points to finish 16th at the Division 1 state tournament on Friday and Saturday in Holland.

Ann Arbor Pioneer won the title a the tournament played at Hope College and Holland Christian.

Kamryn Dumas had a bye in the first round, then defeated Ann Arbor Huron's Jiaqi Huang 6-0, 6-1 in the second round. She then fell 6-3, 6-2 to Troy;s Shreyana Keeta in the quarterfinals at No. 4 singles.

Megan Blake won 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1 singles over Okemos' Emily Wang in the first round. She then won the first set in a tiebreak during the quarterfinals against Ann Arbor Skyline's Maddie Slade, but lost 6-0, 3-0 in the final two sets, and was forced to retire.

At No. 1 singles, Chloe Duckworth lost 6-1, 6-0 in the first round to Okemos' Isabell Hult.

At No. 2 singles, Danielle Lebster lost 6-0, 6-1 in the first round to Port Huron Northern's Addison Lyons.

In doubles, West Ottawa's Eleanor Ervine and Maggie Rothsstein had a bye, then won 6-2, 7-5 over Bloomfied Hills before knosint 6-2, 6-0 to Troy in the quarterfinals at No. 3 doubles.

At No. 1, Eden Hamilton and Jessica Zhang won 6-0, 6-2 over Livonia Stevenson in the first round then lost to Ann Arbor Pioneer 6-0, 6-1 in the second round.

At No. 2, West Ottawa's Sam Barveld and Haven March won 6-0, 6-0 in the first round over Dearborn then lost to top seed Ann Arbor Pioneer 6-0, 6-1 in the second round.

At No. 4, Danika Denhof and Kallyn Gaul lost 6-4, 6-4 to Ann Arbor Huron in the first round.
