On to state: El Paso High boys, Chapin girls punch tickets to UIL state meet

The Region I cross country meets started Monday at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock and two El Paso high schools qualified for state.

Boys

The El Paso High School boys team won the regional title in Class 5A with 104 points.

Colleyville Heritage was second with 119 points, Argyle was third with 125 points and Aledo was fourth with 135 points.

Miles Westbrook led the way for EPHS with a fourth-place finish in a time of 15 minutes, 44.10 seconds, Leo Valenzuela was 21st with a time of 16:34.80 and Ulysses O'Rourke was 27th with a time of 16:50.60.

"Our kids ran great and they've worked so hard to achieve this," Nathan Casillas said. "It's a special group of kids."

In Class 6A, Franklin and Eastwood are both headed to the state meet. Franklin finished third with 111 points and Eastwood was fourth with 129 points. Southlake Carroll took top honors with 50 points and McKinney Boyd was second with 86 points.

Eastwood's Aidan Torres was second with a time of 15:16.10 time and Franklin's Matthew Engle was seventh in a time of 15:22.30 to lead their respective teams.

Americas' Diego Romero, Pebble Hills' Mark Barajas and Coronado's Edgar Valles all qualified as individuals. Romero was eighth in a time of 15:26.20, Barajas was 14th in time of 15:42.00 and Valles was 15th in time of 15:42.80

Girls

The Chapin girls team is headed to state in Class 5A after finishing fourth with 190 points. Aledo won the team title with 45 points, Colleyville Heritage was second with 82 points and Grapevine was third with 221 points.

The Huskies edged out Lubbock Monterey for the fourth and final spot for state. Lubbock Monterey finished with 201 points.

Chapin was led by Rebecca Duran, who finished 13th with a time of 19:18.50 and Ava Dennis was 33rd with a time of 20:22.60.

"Our kids fought hard and really battled," Huskies coach Mario Gomez said. "Our freshman Abigail Sanchez and Jocelynne Diaz Torres both ran great and were key to us making state."

The Huskies last reached state in 2008.

The state meet is scheduled for Nov. 3-4 at Old Settler's Park in Round Rock.

In Class 6A, Franklin qualified as a team with a fourth-place finish, scoring 143 points. Southlake Carroll won the regional title, followed by Lewisville Flower Found and Northwest Nelson.

Emily Orr was the top finisher for the Cougars, placing fifth with a time of 18:25.

Eastwood's Adelynn Rodriguez is headed to state as an individual after placing eighth with a time of 18:34.20.
