State champ Lansing leads all-state volleyball picks from Section 4
The strength of the Interscholastic Athletic Conference and the resurgence of Elmira High School's team are reflected in the 2023 all-state volleyball selections for New York.
Six players from the IAC, led by a trio from New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class B champion Lansing, are among the first-team selections as chosen by the New York Volleyball Coaches Association.
Lansing's first-team picks were Kayla Palmer, Jolene Gunther and Emma Best.
Earning first-team honors from Class C state semifinalist Trumansburg of the IAC was Lauren Millspaugh.
Class D state semifinalist Candor, another IAC school, had two first-team picks: Phoebe Swartz and Nicola Soper.
The first Section 4 title in Elmira Express history included the selection of two all-state choices. Section 4 Class A champ Owego also had two players chosen and AA sectional champion Vestal had one pick.
All told, 23 Section 4 players were chosen all-state. The picks:
Class AAA
Third team: Gracee Work, Corning, junior outside hitter; Madison Jones, Elmira, junior middle hitter.
Fourth team: Piper Hooey, Elmira, senior outside hitter.
Class AA
Fourth team: Aubrey Baker, Vestal, senior outside hitter; Jade Taylor, Union-Endicott, junior outside hitter.
Class A
Third team: Lexi Herceg, Owego, junior setter.
Fourth team: Maggie Hamed, Owego, sophomore outside hitter.
Fifth team: Aleciyah Brodley, Maine-Endwell, senior outside hitter.
Class B
First team: Kayla Palmer, Lansing, senior setter; Jolene Gunther, Lansing, senior libero; Emma Best, Lansing, senior middle hitter.
Second team: Jordan Brinkley, Lansing, sophomore right-side hitter; Cassandra Bellmore, Windsor, senior setter.
Third team: Rylie Conrow, Windsor, junior libero.
Class C
First team: Lauren Millspaugh, Trumansburg, senior middle hitter.
Second team: Sailor Ladd, Trumansburg, senior setter; Kaylee Dickerson-Holly, Trumansburg, senior middle hitter.
Fifth team: Layni Whitmore, Tioga Central, senior middle hitter.
Class D
First team: Phoebe Swartz, Candor, junior setter; Nicola Soper, Candor, sophomore outside hitter.
Third team: Grace Handy, Candor, senior right-side hitter; Mina Thomas, Newfield, senior outside hitter.
Fifth team: Anna Mike, Newfield, senior libero.
