Starting five of the century: Fennville girls - vote for sixth spot
The Sentinel has picked a basketball starting five for each high school from 2000 to the present and will run the all-century teams during the holiday break. Who should join them? Vote for who should be the sixth woman.
Today: Fennville.
Here is The Holland Sentinel's starting five. Vote for the sixth woman below. The poll will remain open until Jan. 24.
Coryne Howard
Guard
Howard broke the all-time scoring record at Fennville. She was a quick guard who could get to the basket and shoot from the outside. She scored a bulk of her points on free throws with the huge ability to get to the lane and draw fouls. Her defense grew throughout her four years and she became an all-state honorable mention player as a senior and was a Holland Sentinel first-team all-area player twice.
Amber VanWieren
Forward/guard
The second-leading scorer in Fennville history, VanWieren was a great slasher who excelled getting to the basket and doing damage. She scored inside, but could outside as well. She also was a strong defender that could take over games. She was a Holland Sentinel All-Area first team player as a senior.
Stephanie Fuller
Guard
An elite slashing guard, Fuller was one of the quickest players we have seen in the area. She could slash and score, but was also one of the best distributors as a point guard we have seen. That double threat kept opponents off balance and led to one of Fennville's best seasons during her senior year. She could also defend the ball extremely well and was a Holland Sentinel All-Area first-team selection as a senior.
Josie Galiger
Forward
One of the best hustle players the area has seen in the past two decades, Galiger was on the floor more than she scored. But that got possessions for her teammates to score. She was also an elite rebounder that kept possessions going. Her instincts and scrapping ability landed her a spot playing college basketball at Lake Michigan Community College.
Sydney DeJonge
Forward
DeJonge was a great lead-by-example leader for the Blackhawks. As a forward she got the ball from Fuller in a lot of great teamwork in the paint. DeJonge could score and defend and helped the Blackhawks to one of their best seasons in school history as a senior.
