Star Power: See the stars of the week in soccer, field hockey, volleyball & golf

Last week featured a major upset, a Catholic League championship, and players excelling at new positions. Check out the Stars of the Week from Sept. 25 to Oct. 1 in soccer, field hockey, volleyball and golf, and be sure to vote in the latest Boys Athlete of the Week Poll, and Girls Athlete of the Week Poll beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Stars of the Week in Girls Soccer

Izzy DiMattia, Pennsbury: The sophomore picked a great time to score her first career varsity goal. DiMattia, a defensive specialist who primarily plays midfield, scored the Falcons’ first goal on their new soccer field against CB East. The Patriots went on to win the game.

Kate Norbury, Lansdale Catholic: The senior defender scored her first varsity goal, and it came at the perfect time, giving the Crusaders the lead against Conwell-Egan. Norbury also had an assist in the win, and also had the assist on Carolyn Moore’s game-winning goal in an OT win over Mount St. Joseph.

Ashley Lapp, Dock Mennonite: The senior tallied two goals and had two assists in the Pioneers’ 6-0 win over Delco Christian. Lapp’s sister, sophomore Shelby Lapp, had an assist on one of the goals.

Jessie Bernabe, CB East: The junior scored three goals for the Patriots in an 8-1 win over Pennsbury.

Bri Garyah, Neshaminy: After a long defensive battle extended into overtime, Garyah recorded the game-winning goal to give Neshaminy a 1-0 OT win against Souderton.

Sophie Craig, Pennridge: The midfielder was a force to be reckoned with during the Rams’ 6-0 win against CR South. In addition to scoring a goal, Craig assisted on three more goals, thanks to well-placed corner kicks, and set the tone for the game with her energy and helped the Rams to their 10th win.

Emma Levin, Hatboro-Horsham: The senior Towsen commit scored two goals to lead the Hatters to a huge win over then-unbeaten William Tennent. In her next game against Upper Moreland, Levin scored a goal in the second half to give the Hatters a 2-1 win. It was her sixth goal in three games.

Maddy Murphy, North Penn: The junior, who recently committed to Division-I University of Buffalo, tallied two goals to lead the Knights to a 3-0 win over Bensalem.

Lexi Fischer, Council Rock North: Fischer scored the game-winning goal late in the second half to give the Indians a 1-0 win over Souderton.

Danika Roche, Bensalem: Roche delivered two goals to lead the Owls to a win over CB South, ending a three-game losing streak for Bensalem.

Star of the Week in Boys Soccer

Jarett Wodotinsky, CB West: The goalie recorded two consecutive shutouts and also led the back line in wins against Pennsbury and Harry S. Truman. Wodotinsky made several acrobatic saves against Pennsbury, each of which were necessary to secure the 1-0 victory.

Dan Salija, Holy Ghost: The sophomore scored the lone goal of the game in a tough defensive battle against Germantown Academy to give the Firebirds the 1-0 win.

Jake Luciani, Souderton: Luciani scored both goals for Souderton in a 2-1 triumph against Pennsbury.

Zach Hargraves, Neshaminy: The freshman’s play set the stage for Neshaminy’s 2-0 win over Southern Lehigh. Hargraves’ creativity and determination created several scoring opportunities for his teammates throughout the game.

Danny Shelak, Lansdale Catholic: The Crusaders' goalie silenced Catholic League rival Archbishop Carroll in a 4-0 win.

CeAri Pollack, Council Rock North: With time running out in double overtime, Pollack connected on a penalty kick to give the Indians a 1-0 win over Souderton and keeping CR North unbeaten (9-0-2).

Brady Hartman, Abington: In a matchup between the top two teams in the SOL, Hartman scored the lone goal to give the Ghosts a 1-0 win and deal Springfield Twp. its first loss of the season. He also scored two goals in a 3-0 win over Lower Moreland.

CJ Leonardo, North Penn: Leonardi scored a pair of goals to help the Knights edge CR South 3-1.

Christian Patelmo, Hatboro-Horsham: The Hatters’ center back’s hustle helped secure a shutout against Upper Moreland. The junior was kept busy all game defending corners and free kicks.

Frankie Rafferty, Council Rock South: Rafferty had a foot in all four goals as the Golden Hawks rebounded from an early deficit to take the win. The senior forward, who also kicks for the football team, registered three goals and assisted on another in the 4-1 win.

Tejas Sasan, Bensalem: Sasan scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give the Owls a thrilling 2-1 win over North Penn.

Stars of the Week in Girls Volleyball

Iris Winegrad, Abington: The defensive specialist played setter for the Ghosts for the first time on Tuesday, and delivered 12 assists, three aces and three digs in a 3-0 sweep of Hatboro-Horsham.

Olivia Hessenthaler, CB South: The freshman led the way defensively in the Titans’ 3-1 win over rival CB East. Hessenthaler had a game-high 15 digs, along with three assists.

Caroline Smith, Germantown Academy: The junior led the offense with 21 kills as the Patriots battled Notre Dame de Namur in a rematch of last year’s Inter-Ac Championship match. Smith also had three blocks to lead the Patriots to a 3-1 win.

Sophia Lodise, Conwell-Egan: In her first varsity appearance, Lodise came off the bench to contribute 12 assists, two digs and two kills in the Eagles 3-1 win over William Tennent. That performance earned Lodise her first-ever varsity start in the next game, where she delivered 29 assists, five digs, three kills and two aces in a 3-0 sweep of LIttle Flower in a PCL match.

Stars of the Week in Field Hockey

Kaeli VanDerSluis, CB South: The sophomore had one of the biggest games of her young career against CB West on Wednesday. VanDerSluis scored two goals for the Titans, with her second being the game-winner in overtime, giving CB South a 2-1 win and dealing the Bucks (9-1) their first loss of the season. That wasn’t the end of VanDerSluis’ contributions for the week. She scored two goals against Bensalem, and had two goals and an assist against Truman, both wins for the Titans.

Aida Ierubino, CB West: The sophomore dished out five assists in the Bucks’ 7-0 win against Abington. In a 7-0 win against Pennsbury, Ierubino tallied two goals and two assists.

Anna Haberle, Quakertown: The Panthers’ goalie was busy in front of the cage as the top two teams in the SOL Liberty Division faced off. Haberle turned away 15 shots on goal, and, after allowing a first-quarter goal, held the Trojans scoreless the rest of the way, including OT, in a 1-1 draw.

Cassidy Landis, Quakertown: The freshman continued her stellar season for the SOL Liberty-leading Panthers, scoring four goals in a win over Cheltenham.

Julia Blair, Souderton: Continuing her hot streak for a surging Souderton, Blair scored both goals for the Big Red in a 2-1 win over Neshaminy. The junior followed that with a hat trick in Thursday’s win against CR North, the fifth straight win for Souderton. Blair has scored 10 goals in her last four games.

Lindsey Campione, Pennridge: With the game on the line and the Rams awarded a penalty stroke, Campione made the most of the opportunity as she hit the back of the cage to give Pennridge a 2-1 overtime win against CR South.

Paige Keller, CB East: Keller dished out three assists to help the Patriots edge Neshaminy 3-2 in an SOL crossover match. The senior also had a goal and an assist in a win over Pennsbury on CB East’s Senior Night.

Stars of the Week in Golf

Ethan Martin, La Salle: The senior won the boys individual title at the Philadelphia Catholic League Golf Championship at Jeffersonville Golf Club. Martin shot a 1-over par round of 71 and helped the Explorers earn their 20th team title since 2000. Scott Hughes and John Stevenson each fired rounds of 72, finishing third and fourth in the individual standings. All three were named First Team All-Catholic on Monday.
