St. Xavier vs. Trinity headlines top Louisville-area KHSAA football games to see in Week 6

Here’s a look at the top five Louisville-area games to see in Week 6 of the high school football season. All games are scheduled for Friday.

St. Xavier (3-1) vs. Trinity (2-3), 8 p.m. at L&N Stadium

This will be the 91st meeting between the Catholic school rivals, with Trinity holding a 48-40-2 lead in the series. St. X has won the past two games, though, including a 13-8 victory last year in front of a crowd announced at 16,884.

St. X suffered its first loss of the season Friday, falling to Cincinnati Elder 31-21 after committing three turnovers in the second half. Junior running back Manny Gray rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown in the loss. St. X’s Kevin Wallace is looking to become the fourth coach in state history to reach 350 career victories. He has a 349-118 record in a career that’s spanned 38 seasons at Warren East, Bowling Green and St. X.

Trinity will look to bounce back from a 37-20 loss at Male on Friday. Quarterbacks Zane Johnson and Jackson Hepner threw a combined 36 passes in the defeat, a number coach Jay Cobb said was too high because of the Shamrocks’ lackluster running game (57 yards on 21 carries). Johnson, a freshman, has taken over as the starter and completed 59 of 108 passes (54.6%) for 637 yards and seven touchdowns with four interceptions.

Manual continued to roll Friday with a 38-35 victory over Class 5A power South Warren. Traynor is averaging 7.0 yards per carry this season and has scored a team-best eight touchdowns.

Christian Academy rallied past Ryle 34-22 on Friday as junior wide receiver Connor Hodge caught 12 passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Hodge, a junior who has committed to East Carolina, leads the team in receptions (44) and touchdowns (eight). Defensively, he ranks fourth on the squad with 22 tackles (11 solo) and has a team-best three interceptions.

This will be the first-ever matchup between the schools.

PRP is 1-19 all-time against Male. The Panthers’ only victory in the series came in 1978 by a 56-8 score. Male finished 0-11 that season.

Male rolled past Trinity 37-20 on Friday as senior Shammai Gates rushed for 58 yards and two touchdowns and senior cornerback Brenden Bates intercepted two passes, returning one for a touchdown. Junior Antonio Harris had his first reception of the season and finished with four catches for 55 yards. Harris has primarily played defensive back this season but earned honorable-mention All-State honors at wide receiver in 2022. Bulldogs coach Chris Wolfe said Harris likely will see his playing time at wide receiver increase as the season progresses.
