Spurs’ Jeremy Sochan to skip EuroBasket 2022 to prepare for NBA

Spurs’ Jeremy Sochan to skip EuroBasket 2022 to prepare for NBA

San Antonio Spurs rookie Jeremy Sochan on Tuesday announced he has opted against playing with the Polish national team in EuroBasket 2022.

Sochan, whose mother is Polish, was among the players named to Poland’s preliminary roster for the tournament, which will run Sept. 1-18. He hadn’t joined the team during its preparations for the event, including recent exhibition games.

The ninth pick will stay in the United States and prepare for his rookie season with the Spurs. The national team had been in contact with the Spurs and understood the upcoming season took priority over EuroBasket 2022.

Sochan first played for Poland’s junior national team in the 2019 FIBA U16 European Championship. He became the youngest to play with the senior national team in the FIBA EuroBasket qualifiers in February 2021, scoring 18 points in a win over Romania.

He will likely continue to be in Poland’s plans for future events.

With training camp beginning in late September, it was unclear how active Sochan would be with Poland. He will turn his attention to the start of training camp and his rookie season with the Spurs.
