Spring Ball Takeaways: New trio of scholarship players absent for Ducks’ 6th spring practice

After a busy weekend with a lot of eyeballs watching, the Oregon Ducks got to work in a less crowded environment on Tuesday morning, but that doesn’t mean that the intensity was turned down at all.

For the sixth practice of spring ball, we got to see Oregon players who were more in a rhythm,  really taking advantage of the practices early this spring to get better in the long run.

Once again, media members got to watch the first 15-20 minutes, taking in stretching, special team drills, and some individual work. Later, we will have the chance to talk to head coach Dan Lanning, as well as WR coach Junior Adams, RB Bucky Irving, S Steve Stephens, and DL Treven Ma’ae.

Here are some of the biggest notes from practice.

Absences

There were a handful of notable absences on Tuesday morning. For the record, it needs to be noted that we are only able to see players as they walk into practice, and for the first 15-20 minutes of practice. There is always the possibility that the players we marked as absent were at practice later, but we were unable to identify them.

The absent players on Tuesday were as follows:

  • RB Jordan James

  • CB Khyree Jackson

  • LB Harrison Taggart

  • S Daymon David

  • DL Jaeden Moore

  • OL Holden Whipple

  • OL Gernorris Wilson

  • WR Josh Delgado

  • DB DJ Beckum

Justius Lowe Returns

While there were more absences to pay attention to, it should also be noted that redshirt freshman WR Justius Lowe was back at practice in full pads on Tuesday. Lowe has been absent for the past handful of practices, so that was notable to see.

Limited Players

There were a couple of players who were in full pads and went through stretching drills but were limited once the groups broke out into individual and position drills.

Among them were OL Junior Angilau and OL Michael Wooten. However, OL Marcus Harper also appeared to be somewhat limited, working to the side on center snaps while the rest of the OL group went through blocking drills. It is unclear whether this is due to an injury, or if he simply was getting more reps in at center and working on his snapping.

Special Teams

The punt return and kick return groups were the same as they have been over the past several practices, with the one notable absence of Jordan James as a kick returner. Otherwise, they went as follows:

Punt Return

  • Troy Franklin

  • Tez Johnson

  • Kris Hutson

  • Cole Martin

Kick Return

  • Bucky Irving

  • Noah Whittington

  • Jayden Limar

Wrap Tackle Drill

We got to see a wrap tackle drill at the end of the media allotted time, which started out as a slowed-down form-tackling drill — defensive back or linebacker against a running back in open space — but quickly sped up after the first run-through.

I highlighted a couple of plays, notably when Dante Dowdell got the best of Jamal Hill in a rep and made Hill miss badly after juking to the inside near the sideline. There was also a rep between Kilohana Haasenritter and Zach Grisham that I made note of, where Haasenritter also made the DB miss badly after a juke.
