Sports shorts: Lodi FC 12U team takes state cup

Feb. 29—Three teams from Lodi FC youth soccer won state cups in the NorCal Premier League over the weekend, completing a journey that began with the cup's group stage in November.

Lodi FC's 2012 boys team won the 12U Premier Cup with Sunday's win over Almaden FC 12U Green at Fallon Sports Park in Dublin. The teams played to a scoreless tie in regulation, and Lodi FC won the match 4-2 in penalty kicks.

Lodi FC's 2014 boys and 2014 girls also won their brackets — the girls in Premiere 2 and the boys in Bronze.

The win left Lodi FC ranked No. 11 by SoccerRankings, with their name next to youth teams from clubs such as the New York Red Bulls, Philadelphia Union, and Chicago Fire.

Lodi's 12U boys squad is made up of Amarion Onwurah, Anthony Garcia, Darren Mueller, Giovani Cornelio, Jett Gomez, Julian Martinez, Kimani Bruno, Lucas Williams, Luis Salazar, Michael Ndah, Niko Karpenko, Raphael Le and Sebastian Contreras-Vigil. The coaches are Angel Lopez and Carlos Aceituno, and club president is Sixto Gomez.

Lodi FC, which has compiled a 72-2-0 record this season, has upcoming tournaments in Dallas, Phoenix, San Diego and Minnesota.

SOFTBALL

Varsity: Elk Grove 5, Lodi 4

The Thundering Herd scored the deciding run in the bottom of the seventh inning on Wednesday, sending Lodi to a 1-1 record.

For the Flames, Tealla Rivera went 3-for-4, Janie Schallberger was 2-for-4 with a double, Holly Reich went 2-for-4, Abby Schweigert went 2-for-3 and Allyson Frank had a single. In the circle, Frank went three inningsand Schweigert went 3 1/3 innings.

Lodi is back in action today with a pair of games at the Ceres Tournament. The JV game also ended in a 5-4 Elk Grove win.

Varsity: Ripon 13, Tokay 0

The Tigers suffered a no-hitter on Wednesday in a game that ended after five innings for the 10-run rule. Tokay (2-1) was scheduled to play at Franklin-Stockton on Thursday. The JV game went to Ripon, 14-9.

BASEBALL

Varsity: Tokay 9, East Union 1

An eight-run third inning made the difference in Wednesday's victory. Tokay (2-1) will play at Manteca today, then will host Manteca on Monday.

Varsity: Franklin-Stockton 7, Galt 2

The Warriors dropped to 0-2 on Wednesday, with a triple and a single from Michael Perucca and a single from Anthony Arriaga. Galt will host Leroy Greene Academy on Monday.

VOLLEYBALL

Varsity boys: Hollister 3, Tokay 0

The Tigers suffered a 25-19, 25-12, 25-22 sweep on Wednesday, and will host McNair today.
