Sports scores, highlights: Case baseball game postponed due to Lynn Voc-Tech highway issue

The spring high school season playoff season is underway for Fall River area teams.

Here's a look at scores and highlights from Thursday's action:

Baseball: Case vs. Lynn Voc-Tech, postponed

LOCATION: Joseph Case High School

DATE: June 1

RECORD: Case, 7-13

HIGHLIGHTS: With the temperature soaring to near 90 degrees, the Lynn Voc-Tech baseball team's voyage to Swansea came to an abrupt halt on Route 93 south. Thursday's Division IV preliminary game between the 24th seed Case and the 40th seed Tigers was called shortly after that due to the late arrival of the Lynn Voc-Tech bus, which was estimated to be at the field near 6 p.m.

NEXT UP: The Cardinals will play their postponed game with the Tigers at noon Saturday at B.M.C. Durfee High School.

Baseball: Greenfield 2, Atlantis Charter 1

LOCATION: Greenfield

DATE: June 1

RECORD: Atlantis Charter, 8-9

HIGHLIGHTS: The 39th seeded Tritons dropped a heartbreaker to 26th seed Greenfield in the Division V preliminary game on the road.

Boys Tennis: Westport 3, Sandwich 2

LOCATION: Sandwich

DATE: June 1

RECORD: Westport, 8-7 (3-3 in Mayflower Comprehensive)

HIGHLIGHTS: The 18th seed Wilcats pulled out a stunner on the road against 15th seed Sandwich in the Division IV Round of 32. With the win, Westport advances to the Sweet 16 and will play either No. 2 Cohasset or No. 31 Leicester. Brady Silva was a winner at third singles. At first doubles, Nick DosVais and Luke Coelho won their match while Fortis Machairas and Luke Santos took care of business at second doubles.

Boy Tennis: St. John's Prep 5, Durfee 0

LOCATION: St. John's Prep

RECORD: Durfee, 10-10

HIGHLIGHTS: The Hilltoppers were eliminated from the state tournament after beating swept in five games against No. 2 seed St. John's Prep.

Boys Tennis: Hamilton-Wenham 5, Case 0

LOCATION: Hamilton-Wenham

RECORD: Case, 4-14

HIGHLIGHTS: The 29th seeded Cardinals saw thier season come to end after dropping five straight games against fourth seed Hamilton-Wenham on the road.

Girls Tennis: Braintree 5, Durfee 0

LOCATION: Braintree

RECORD: Durfee, 9-10

HIGHLIGHTS: The 37th seeded Hilltoppers tournament run ends after falling to 28th seed Braintree on the road. Liv Rumsey stepped up at first singles. Second singles player Brooke Tabicas and third singles player Teeda San also had a good showing. At first doubles, Maggie O’Connell and Gabby Farias lost a 4-6, 6-4, 2-10 tie breaker. Sydnie Duong and Emalee Freitas played well at second doubles.

Boys Volleyball: Winchester 3, Durfee 0

LOCATION: Winchester

RECORD: Durfee, 10-11

HIGHLIGHTS: The 23rd seeded Hilltoppers dropped three straight games — 14-25, 23-25, and 19-25 — against 10th seed Winchester in the Division I Round of 32 on the road. Jack Gauvin led Durfee had 20 assists. Cam DeMello chipped in with 10 kill shots and five blocks. Chris Milfort had 10 kill shots and Anthony Grannum added 8 kill shots. Daniel Matuszek (13 digs, five assists), Elias DaSilva (10 digs), and Brady Lavoie (six digs) also finished strong.
