Sports: LaPoynor overtakes Bremond, Martins Mill advances

Feb. 17—After leading most of the night, the LaPoynor Lady Flyers were staring at a three point deficit against Bremond with just under a minute to go, in their area playoff game at Navarro College, Thursday.

The Flyers battled back when Savannah Reynolds sliced through the lane flipped up a shot that just crawled over the rim as she was fouled to close the gap.

"She's just a sophomore. She's going to be kind of special," Lowery said. "And the free throws from our senior Kitty Eldridge, those were big time. That's clutch."

Eldridge points gave the Lady Flyers their final 56-53 advantage. At various times she'd sparked the Flyers with a drive to the bucket, a big defensive stop or a needed free throw.

The game started with the two teams close. LaPoynor led 11-10, then took off one a 13 point run. They eventually extended the lead to 30-12 on a bucket by freshman Brooklyn Bristow.

Bremond quickly seized the momentum with steals and fast breaks led by junior guard Armiyah Castilleja. They trimmed the LaPoynor lead to 32-26 at halftime

"Those Bremond girls like to press and we've been saying "Don't let them speed us up," all week and they sped us up a time or two," Coach Brad Lowery said.

In the third, LaPoynor stretched the lead to 13, but had to settle for a 42-37 lead after three periods.

In the fourth, the Lady Tiger continued to inch closer until they took the lead, 51-50, with 1:07 left. Bremond pitched in two more points for a 53-50 edge, putting the Flyers on the brink of elimination.

LaPoynor inbounded the ball and worked for a good shot. When Reynolds delivered a shot in traffic, the momentum swung back to the Flyers.

The win gave the Flyers a 24-8 record. They play the winner of the Frankston-Marlin game next week. Bremond finished the season with a 27-2 record.

Martins Mill defeats Riesel

In the second game at Navarro, Thursday, Martins Mill took control early to run away from the Riesel Indians 56-38. Freshman Kara Nixon set the tone for the night by scoring a basket, then sealing the ball and adding a second to give the Lady Mustangs a 4-0 lead.

Nixon finished with 23 points.

The Mustangs never trailed and took a 16-9 lead after the first quarter and a 32-22 advantage at halftime.

Martins Mill is 31-5 and will meet Lovelady on Monday.
