Aug. 25—UNM volleyball beats Seton Hall

Athina Dimitriadis had nine kills and the University of New Mexico volleyball team used a strong defensive effort to earn a season-opening 3-0 victory over Seton Hall at the adidas/UC Irvine Invitational on Friday.

The Lobos limited the Pirates to an .083 attack percentage and had four players post double-digit dig totals in the 25-15, 27-25, 25-13 victory. Setter Melissa Walden had 31 assists and 12 digs. Kaitlynn Biassou and Uxue Guereca had eight kills apiece for UNM.

The Lobos faced a set point at 24-23 in the second set, but got a key kill from Dimitriadis and an ace from Kali Wolf to fight off the threat. Wolf had three of UNM's six aces in the match.

UNM was scheduled to face UC Irvine in a late match Friday and will take on San Francisco at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Nunn returns to UNM basketball

Former University of New Mexico women's basketball standout Jaisa Nunn has returned to the program as a graduate assistant coach.

Nunn, a three-time All-Mountain West selection and conference Player of the Year in 2018-19, racked up 1,570 points (sixth in program history) and 952 rebounds (second) during her UNM tenure. She rejoins former teammate Nike McClure, an assistant coach on the Lobos' staff.

Bronny James has heart defect

LOS ANGELES — Bronny James went into cardiac arrest during a basketball workout at the University of Southern California last month because of a congenital heart defect, according to a family spokeswoman.

The 18-year-old son of Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James was stricken on July 24. He was hospitalized at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and later was seen by doctors at the Mayo Clinic and Atlantic Health-Morristown Medical Center in New Jersey.

A statement issued Friday by Stephanie Rosa of the LeBron James Family Foundation said the probable cause of James' sudden cardiac arrest has been identified.

"It is an anatomically and functionally significant Congenital Heart Defect which can and will be treated," the statement said. "We are very confident in Bronny's full recovery and return to basketball in the very near future."

Spain soccer head won't resign

BARCELONA, Spain — The president of Spain's soccer federation has defiantly refused to resign for kissing a female player on the lips after the Women's World Cup final.

Luis Rubiales told a general assembly of the federation on Friday that his kiss with player Jenni Hermoso on Sunday in Sydney, Australia, was consensual. Hermoso strongly denied his version in two separate statements.

Hermoso and her teammates say they will no longer play for Spain if Rubiales doesn't step down, and Spain's government says it will seek his suspension.
