Nov. 18—Pirate wrestling

The Greensburg wrestling team opened its 2023-24 campaign with a 60-18 win at Christel House Academy.

Pirate winners include Cayden Beagle at 113 pounds (forfeit), Micah Spears at 120 pounds (forfeit), Preston Merritt at 126 pounds, Landin Shepherd at 132 pounds, Ethan Elliott at 138 pounds, Gavin Vires at 144 pounds, Adam Underhill at 150 pounds, Brayden Slavey at 157 pounds and Aaron Maze at 175 pounds.

The Pirates return to the mat Dec. 2 at Milan in the Milan 6-Way.

MEC All-Conference Football

The 2023 MEC Football All-Conference team has been announced. North Decatur's Xander Jones, Mason Morris, Kaden Muckerheide, Aiden O'Dell, Cooper Parmer, Kaleb Phelps and Owen Wiseman were all selected to the team.

Pirate to honor state champs

Greensburg Community High School will celebrate the 2013 and 2014 IHSAA State Champion boys basketball teams at the Dec. 1 game against Batesville.

Players and cheerleaders from both teams will be recognized between the junior varsity and varsity games.

GJHS basketball

The eighth grade Pirates suffered a close loss, 44-41, to Jennings County Thursday.

Max Buening was the top scorer for Pirates with 19 points.

Trailing 10-2, the Panthers went on a 10-point run to take the lead. The fourth quarter was the best for Pirates, as they outscored the Panthers 13-9.

Matthew Fields knocked down two shots from beyond the arc for Pirates and scored 12. Fields collected six boards to lead Pirates on the glass. Also contributing for Pirates were Brennan Noah (3 points), Sam Crowell (3 points), Mason Herpel (2 points), and Colt McCalvin (2 points).

St. Mary's basketball

Both the seventh and eighth grade St. Mary's Knights soared to victory against St. Bartholomew Tuesday.

In the seventh grade match-up, St. Mary's won 34-13.

Parker Yake emerged as a standout performer for the Knights, leading the charge with nine points. Helping to build the team's success, Gabe McMillan and Gavin Lang each scored sixpoints. Additionally, the balanced scoring effort included Izaac Kramer with three points followed by Landen Fuel, Auggie Sheppard, Logan Fisse, Maxwell Gauck and Eric Witkemper with two points each. Assisting in the scoring, Kramer led with two assists, and McMillan and Fuel supplied one each. Defensively, Gauck led the team with three steals followed by Witkemper two and Yake and McMillan each with one. In the end, the Knights defeated the Irish 34-13.

For the eighth grade, St. Mary's posted a 50-19 victory.

Carson Kendall poured in 30 points. Backing up Kendall's performance was Eric Witkemper six points, Wyatt Yake five points, Logan Fisse three points and Henry Schutte, Gabe McMillan, and Parker Yake each with a bucket. W. Yake boosted his stats for the evening with six assists, while Schutte and P. Yake each added assists of their own. Kendall, W. Yake, Schutte, and Maxwell Gauck led the team in steals.
