Sporting KC draws with Houston Dynamo in season opener

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Sporting Kansas City opened the 2024 season with a draw where their 2023 season ended in Houston.

Sporting made a turnaround run last season to the Western Conference semifinals where they fell to Houston. For their season opener, the intensity matched the last game’s, and ended in a 1-1 draw at Shell Energy Stadium.

A Brad Smith goal in the 42nd minute would’ve given Houston a 1-0 lead before the half but it was waved off for offside.

SKC midfielder Erik Thommy opened the scoring in the 61st minute with a solo run that led to a left-footed goal from the left side of the box.

Houston’s Gabriel Segal subbed in for Smith in the 67th minute and equalized the match in the 69th minute with an assist from Ibrahim Aliyu, who was flagged for the offside that waved the first goal off.

Houston dominated possession with 62% of the ball and outshot Sporting 12-6 and blocked four of Sporting’s six shots.

SKC hosts Philadelphia Union for the home opener on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
