Rarely does a high school golf team combine so much talent on one roster, but Viera High's was loaded in 2023. Shayaan Kim was one of several with a world of potential.
Kim is the 2023 FLORIDA TODAY Boys Golfer of the Year, chosen from a logjam at the top.
Kim and the Hawks dominated local high school golf during the season, and he showed consistent strength in competition.
He showed mastery of the course on Oct. 30 at The Legends at Orange Lake Resort Golf Course in Kissimmee, shooting a 69 to tie the low score for the FHSAA Region 2-3A tournament. The Hawks ninth-grader helped his team to a third-place finish at the event, and they continued on to the state tournament.
Kim started his postseason with a nine-hole 38 at Viera East, two shots off the lead and tied for fifth in another of those logjams at the top. At Sandridge Golf Club in Vero Beach on Oct. 23, he turned in an 18-hole round of 77, three shots off the lead for the District 8-3A contest.
At the FHSAA Class 3A tournament at Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Kim's rounds were 75, 84 and 75.

First team
Alexander Bercea, Sophomore, Viera
Bercea won the District 9-3A title at Sandridge Golf Club in Vero Beach with a 74. He tied for fifth in the Cape Coast Conference with a 38 for nine holes.
Turin Duber, Freshman, Viera
Duber shot a round of 75 at Sandridge Golf Club to finish as the District 8-3A runner-up. He shot rounds of 77-73-77 at the 3A state tournament.
Shayaan Kim, Freshman, Viera
Kim shot 69 for the Region 2-3A tournament at The Legends of Orange Lake in Kissimmee to tie for the low score. He placed fifth in the district and tied for fifth at the CCC event.
Zachary McGoffin, Sr., Viera
McGoffin was the Cape Coast Conference runner-up with a nine-hole 36 at Viera East. He tied for third in District 8-3A, shooting 76 at Sandridge Golf Club.
Carson Sisler, Freshman, Cocoa Beach
Sisler was the Cape Coast Conference medalist, shooting 36 over nine holes at Viera East. He tied for third in District 7-1A at LPGA International's Jones Course.
Andy Zhang, Junior, Holy Trinity
Zhang placed third at the Region 2-1A tournament at Hawkstone Country Club in Gainesville, shooting a 71. He tied for ninth in District 7-1A.
