Rhoades was an assistant last season for coach Bill Zych, who came to Southport in 2023 after 13 seasons at Pike. Rhoades coached at Mt. Vernon from 2018 through 2023, leading the Marauders to two sectional championships and a 74-42 overall record. He was placed on leave in late February of 2023 following an arrest for operating a vehicle while intoxicated in Shelby County. Rhoades was reinstated to his teaching job at Mt. Vernon but stepped down after the season from the coaching position.

Southport was almost starting over completely when Zych was hired to replace former coach Eric Brand, who led the Cardinals to a 14-10 record in 2022-23 with a senior-dominated team. All six of the Cardinals’ top scorers this season were juniors and sophomores.
