Southern Miss football to name new offensive coordinator for 2024; OLB coach fired
HATTIESBURG — Southern Miss football is continuing to adjust its coaching staff.
Coach Will Hall revealed in his weekly Monday appearance on "Super Talk Eagle Hour" that there will be a new offensive coordinator for the 2024 season.
“Yes,” Hall said when asked if there will be a new offensive coordinator. “Like I said, our offensive struggles over the last few years were my fault. We’re gonna move forward from there.”
Sam Gregg is currently the offensive coordinator as well as the offensive line coach. He and quarterbacks coach Jordy Joseph split offensive play-calling duties for the final five games of the season when Hall surrendered that role.
Gregg has been the offensive coordinator for the past two seasons. The Golden Eagles did not have an offensive coordinator in Hall’s first season in 2021.
Southern Miss (3-9, 2-6 Sun Belt) averaged 23.2 points per game in 2023, the third-lowest in the conference.
Hall did not provide specifics on how Southern Miss will approach the hiring of a new coordinator.
In addition, outside linebackers coach Mark Criner has been fired; he is the fourth assistant to be dismissed since the end of the 2023 season. The firings all were confirmed by a Southern Miss team spokesperson Monday evening.
Criner had been with Southern Miss since 2021 and served as the outside linebackers coach in all three seasons. Defensive coordinator/safeties coach Dan O'Brien, defensive line coach Brandon Lacy and tight ends coach Cayden Cochran all have been fired in the past two days.
Criner signed a one-year deal worth $132,000 in March. His contract calls for a pro-rated buyout if he is terminated without cause.
