Southern Miss baseball live score updates vs Marshall: Golden Eagles start Sun Belt play

HATTIESBURG — Southern Miss baseball begins Sun Belt Conference play with a three-game series against Marshall at Pete Taylor Park.

The Golden Eagles (11-6) are playing well through the first month of the Christian Ostrander era, most recently slugging their way to a 9-7 win over No. 12 Alabama on Tuesday. They've yet to lose a weekend series this season.

Marshall (6-10) began the season 0-4 but has won its last two weekend series against Manhattan and Southeast Missouri State. It's coming off an 11-2 loss to West Virginia on Tuesday and has one common opponent with Southern Miss in Indiana State. The Thundering Herd lost both of its games to Indiana State on a neutral field.

This is the first meeting between Southern Miss and Marshall since 2019 when they were both members of Conference USA.

Game 1: Southern Miss 8, Marshall 4

Southern Miss jumped on Marshall with three runs in the first inning and never looked back. First baseman Davis Gillespie batted 3-for-4 with a two-run home run to the opposite field for two of his five RBIs on the night. Center fielder Dalton McIntyre flirted with a cycle with a double and a triple to raise his batting average to .426. Niko Mazza earned the win on a career-high 109 pitches in 6.1 innings, striking out 10 batters and conceding four earned runs.

Game 2: Southern Miss 2, Marshall 1

Southern Miss won Saturday's game on a delayed walk-off celebration when a video review overturned an umpire's call at home plate. Instead of Lawson Odom being out on Ozzie Pratt's single, he was awarded home plate because of catcher's interference.

Neither team had a hit until the eighth inning when Marshall and Southern Miss both blasted solo home runs. Gillespie hit Southern Miss' home run and now has 11 RBIs in the last four games. Billy Oldham struck out eight batters in a career-long eight innings on the mound.

Game 3: Southern Miss 7, Marshall 5

Southern Miss and Marshall were tied at 2-2 in the seventh inning until the Golden Eagles pulled away with four runs in the inning. Billy Butler delivered an RBI single, then Carson Paetow struck a three-run home run on the next at-bat. The Thundering Herd spotted three runs on reliever McCarty English in the ninth inning before JB Middleton recorded the final out.
