GIRLS BASKETBALL

Fairhaven 39, Westport 38

Tenley Dakin hit the basket and free throw for the game-winning three-point play with 12 seconds left to lift the Blue Devils to their first win of the season. She finished with a team-high 14 points. Sydney Burke scored seven points while Emerson Bourgault and Maya Medeiros had six apiece. “It was a great, hard-fought game by both teams,” said Fairhaven coach Jeff Perry. Fairhaven (1-2, 0-2 SCC) hosts Bourne on Dec. 28.

Old Colony 31, Blue Hills 19

Isabel Hougasian scored nine points while Hailey Hathaway had eight and Brooke Jason added seven to power the Cougars to their first win of the season. Old Colony (1-1) hosts Bristol-Plymouth on Dec. 28.

GIRLS SWIMMING

New Bedford 94, Apponequet 70

The Whalers (1-0) swept the three relays as they opened the season with a win at UMass Dartmouth. Cynthia Torres, Caroline Huston, Annabelle Huston, and Nora Blanchard teamed up to take first in the 200 medley relay (2:10.96) while Caroline Huston, Tess Tarpey, Blanchard and Sara Curry won the 200 freestyle relay in 2:00.32. Curry, Annabelle Huston, Amelia Davis and Cynthia Torres were first in the 400 freestyle relay (4:27.26). Torres also won the 100 freestyle (1:01.02) while Annabelle Huston was first in the 200 IM (2:38.85) and Caroline Huston was the fastest in the 50 freestyle (27.89). Mari MacMaster won diving with 149.55 points. For Apponequet, Emma Kelliher and Devin Sylvia each won two events. Kelliher was first in the 200 freestyle (2:22.23) and 100 breaststroke (1:19.53) while Devin Sylvia took first in the 100 backstroke (1:08.35) and swam a sectional-qualifying 1:06.56 to win the 100 butterfly. Lauren Bernaiche won the 500 freestyle (6:40.64). The Lakers (0-2) host Bishop Feehan on Jan. 4.

BOYS SWIMMING

Apponequet 83, New Bedford 79

The Lakers were sparked by double-winners Colin Belmore, David Jope and Eugene Jung. Belmore won the 200 IM (2:16.65) and 100 butterfly (59.84) while Jope was first in the 50 freestyle (28.37) and 100 freestyle (1:06.87) and Jung was fastest in the 200 freestyle (2:14.37) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.81). Belmore teamed up with Jung, Hunter Owen and Alex Keefe to win the 200 medley relay with a sectional-qualifying time of 1:53.710. Belmore also ran on the first-place 400 freestyle relay team (4:16.26) along with Charlie Daniell, Jope and Keefe. Daniell, Owen, Jope and Jung won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:54.55). Owen took first in the 100 backstroke (1:06.66) and Keefe won the 500 freestyle (5:32.44). The Lakers (1-1) host Bishop Feehan on Jan. 4. For New Bedford (0-1) Joao DeSouza won diving with 125.85 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Blue Hills 75, Old Colony 53

Matt McGuiggan and Chris Egan each scored 11 points for the Cougars.

BOYS HOCKEY

Bishop Stang 4, Southeastern 0

Justin Gouviea had a hand in three goals, scoring two and assisting on another as the Spartans improved to 4-0. Jack Jedrey added two goals while Seamus Marshall and Tyler Beck each had an assist. Brayden Bennett had eight saves while Matt Dore had nine. The Spartans ride a 14-game unbeaten streak dating back to last year into their matchup Dec. 28 against rival Dartmouth.

Dartmouth 6, Brockton/Stoughton 0

Damien Medeiros erupted for four goals while Aidan Cruz added two goals and two assists. JC Frates handed out five assists while Reid Martin had two. Dartmouth (3-0, 0-0 SEC) faces Bishop Stang at 5 p.m. on Dec. 28 at the Stang Dartmouth Holiday Tournament.

Somerset Berkley 5, GNB Voc-Tech 1

Brandon Borges scored the lone goal for the Bears, assisted by Joao Oliveira. Mike Melo came up with some key saves keeping the Bears in the game. Voc-Tech (0-2, 0-1 SCC) hosts South Shore on Monday.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Bishop Stang 6, St. Joseph’s Prep 1

Bella Batista (assist) and Mikayla Brightman each scored two goals to power the Spartans. Kacey Curran got her first varsity goal and Adeline Youngclaus rounded out the scoring with a goal. Jordan Theriault (two assists), Lexi Yost (two assists), Emily Curran (two assists), Jenna Nogueira (one assist) and Sophia Babineau (one assist) also contributed on offense. Stang (2-1-1, 1-0-1) hosts Old Rochester on Monday at 3 p.m. at Hetland.

BOYS TRACK

GNB Voc-Tech 47, Apponequet 39

Ian Nickerson had a big all-around meet for Apponequet, taking first in the shot put and high jumps and second in both the 55 and 300. Aydan Fournier won the 1,000 and mile while Lucas Quinn took first in the 2-mile and third in the mile. The Lakers (0-2) compete Dec. 28 at the Distance Classic at the Reggie Lewis Center.

GIRLS TRACK

Apponequet 49, GNB Voc-Tech 32

Ava Wisniewski won the 1,000 meters and mile while Orianna Hernandez took first in the high jump and 300 meter to lead the Lakers (1-1) to their first win. Mia Comeau won the shot put and Elena Vargas took first in the 2-mile and second in the 600. Apponequet will compete Dec. 28 at the Distance Classic at the Reggie Lewis Center.

WRESTLING

New Bedford 54, Middleboro 15

Winning for the Whalers by pin were Alex Teixiera (120), Nate Caron (126), Daniel Montiero Peixioto (152), Jose Bonilla (182) and Aaron Gonzalez (heavyweight).
