South Point boys tennis, Gaston Day track among bevy of area athletes to earn state gold

Another NCHSAA championship trophy is bound for Belmont.

The South Point boys tennis team claimed the program’s first state championship Monday, defeating Fike 5-3 in the 3A state final at Burlington Tennis Center.

With the victory, South Point capped its season with a perfect 16-0 record.

The Red Raiders won four of six singles matches, including Shive Patel earning a hard-fought 4-6, 6-4, 10-3 victory in No. 1 singles. Patel, who was named match MVP, also won in doubles with partner Brandon Cunningham, the South Point duo’s 8-6 win over Fike’s Dylan Skinner and Zachary Hill locking up the state title.

Brandon Cunningham also claimed a win in singles competition, defeating Fike’s Hill in straight sets (6-3, 6-1). James Dover and Tyler Cunningham picked up victories in singles competition as well.

South Point’s Asher Dover was the team’s recipient of the match sportsmanship award.

NCHSAA track and field championships

Five individuals and four relay teams left the NCHSAA state track meet in Greensboro with state gold. In addition, Mountain Island Charter’s boys finished second as a team, falling six points short of 1A state champion Swain County.

Here’s a rundown of area medalists.

Class 3A

Boys

  • Bryson Lomick, South Point: Claimed 3A state gold at 200 meters (21.52 seconds), in addition to placing second in the 100-meter dash (10.6 seconds).

  • Jeremiah Sellers, North Lincoln: Placed third in the long jump (21 feet, 6 ½ inches),

  • Max Thompson, Kings Mountain: Claimed state gold at 800 meters (1:53.57).

  • Hunter Zettl, North Lincoln: Placed second in the discus (158 feet, 4 inches).

Girls

  • Olivia Ferraro, North Lincoln: Set a 3A state record in claiming gold at 1,600 meters (4:54.29).

  • Bella Green, North Lincoln: Placed third at 800 meters (2:17.89).

  • Camryn Massey, Ashbrook: Set 3A state meet records in the shot put (45 feet, ¼-inch) and discus (154 feet, 11 inches) en route to claiming state gold in the events.

Class 2A

Boys

  • Damon Cook, Shelby: Placed fourth at 1,600 meters (4:36.29).

  • Kamari Surratt, Burns: Placed fourth in the long jump (21 feet, 10 ½ inches).

Girls

  • Sophia Champion, Lincoln Charter: Placed fourth at 3,200 meters (12:03.32).

  • Shelby 4x200-meter relay: Placed fourth (1:44.52).

Class 1A

Boys

  • Reggie Daniel, Mountain Island Charter: Claimed the state title in the 300-meter hurdles (38.30 seconds) and placed second in the 110-meter hurdles (14.99 seconds). He also finished fourth in the triple jump (42 feet, 11 ½ inches). Daniel was named state meet MVP.

  • Connor Logue, Mountain Island Charter: Placed second in the pole vault (14 feet).

  • Grayson Tillotson, Mountain Island Charter: Placed fourth at 3,200 meters (10:00.37).

  • Mountain Island Charter 4x100-meter relay: Earned a state title (42.35 seconds).

  • Mountain Island Charter 4x200-meter relay: Earned a state title (1:28.77).

Girls

  • Mountain Island Charter 4x100-meter relay: Earned a state title (49.05 seconds).

  • Mountain Island Charter 4x200-meter relay: Claimed state gold (1:44.71).

NCISAA track and field championships

Gaston Day’s boys track and field team claimed the NCISAA Division III title at Gaston Christian School, the Spartans’ 87 points 12 more than second-place Caldwell Academy.

Meanwhile, Gaston Christian’s girls track and field team acquitted itself well at the NCISAA Division II championships in Asheville. The Eagles finished fourth with 72.5 points, 50.5 points behind state champion Asheville School.

Boys Division III medalists

  • Deshawn Coulter: Placed second in 100-meter dash (11.14 seconds) and third in the 200 (22.46 seconds).

  • Gaston Day 4x100-meter relay: Placed second (44.30 seconds).

  • Gaston Day 4x200-meter relay: Claimed a NCISAA state title (1:30.41).

  • Gaston Day 4x400-meter relay: Claimed a NCISAA state title (3:29.49).

  • Chase Owens: Placed second in the long jump (21 feet, 1 inch).

  • Wyatt Smith: Claimed NCISAA state titles at 400 (48.40 seconds) and 800 meters (1:59.01).

Girls Division III medalists

  • Anna Colyer: Placed third in the 200-meter dash (27 seconds)., as well as the 400 (1:02.21)

  • Gaston Day 4x200-meter relay: Placed second (1:54.60).

  • Gaston Day 4x400-meter relay: Placed fourth (4:34.03).

Gaston Christian

Girls Division II medalists

  • Gabrielle Comery: Placed second at 400 meters (59.02 seconds), and third in the 100- (12.69 seconds) and 200-meter (26.34 seconds) dashes.

  • Gaston Christian 4x100-meter relay: Placed fourth (53.62 seconds).

  • Gaston Christian 4x200-meter relay: Claimed NCISAA state gold (1:46.37).

  • Jenna Nicholson: Placed second in the high jump (4 feet, 10 inches).

  • Jessica Williams: Claimed NCISAA state gold in the shot put (33 feet, 11 ¾ inches) in the shot put and third in the discus (83 feet).

  • Olivia Van Pelt: Placed third in the long jump (16 feet, 5 ¾ inches).
