LEVELLAND — Kieves Turner scored 20 points and South Plains College outlasted New Mexico Military Institute 78-73 Saturday in the Texans' Western Junior College Athletic Conference basketball opener.

D.J. Avery had 17 points and nine rebounds for South Plains (4-5, 1-0). Jaden Harris chipped in 12 points, including a 3-point goal that gave the Texans a 54-51 lead, their first of the second half.

It was a back-and-forth game over the next several minutes. The Broncos' Luis Riascos Varon tied the score at 68 on two free throws with 3:26 left. The Texans countered with a 5-0 run that Harris capped with a free throw.

After NMMI narrowed the gap to 75-73 on a steal and layup from Jordan Nelson, the Texans put the game away on their next two possessions with free throws from Tytan Newton and Harris.

Chris Bready led NMMI (7-7, 1-1) with 17 points, followed by Isaiah Williams with 15 and Latik Murphy with 14.

MCPHERSON, Kan. — Kaitlyn Edgemon and Kaylee Edgemon poured in 27 and 20 points, respectively, and No. 6 Wayland Baptist walloped Central Christian in Sooner Athletic Conference play.

Wayland (10-1, 4-0) got 19 points from Jenna Cooper and 11 apiece from Lara Mason and Jessica Medcalf. Fapou Semebene grabbed 13 rebounds to go along with seven points.

MCPHERSON, Kan. — Isaiah Rivera had 20 points and seven rebounds, leading Central Christian past Wayland Baptist in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

Darrell Bryant added 13 points and Byron Staten 12 for Central Christian (8-3, 3-2), which won its fourth game in a row. The Tigers cooled off a Wayland team that had won three games in a row and six of seven.

R.J. Mason led Wayland (6-3, 3-1) with 17 points, followed by Thad Udoh with 12.
