South Jersey high school football roundup for Week 3

DeAngello Conquest's 4-yard touchdown run in overtime was the decisive score and lifted the Overbrook High School football team to a 30-22 victory over visiting Collingswood in West Jersey Football League action on Saturday morning.

Conquest accounted for all of the Rams' points with three rushing touchdowns, a passing TD and had a part of all three two-point conversions. The senior has ran for seven TDs and thrown for three more to power Overbrook (2-1).

Rahsir McQueen-Futch sparked the Rams' defense with a pair of picks.

Eastside 26, Cedar Creek 8: The Tigers forced four turnovers and limited the Pirates to just nine first downs as they took down the Pirates for their first win in the series since 2018. They had dropped their previous four matchups to Cedar Creek, including three by a single point, one of which was the South/Central Group 3 Regional in 2021.

Elijah Satchell had three sacks and a forced fumble, Fatim Diggs had two fumble recoveries and a blocked punt, which resulted in a safety, Marshall Washington Jr. had an interception and a forced fumble and Jules Dominguez added a pick, his third in the last three games.

Eastside quarterback Nazir Flack broke an 8-8 tie with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Scott Freeman with 4:29 remaining, and he closed the game with a 90-yard TD to Dominguez. James Redd III added a 15-yard touchdown run and Roger Brown had an 11-yard scoring scamper.

Florence 28, Princeton 23: Jude Maldonado, Damian Ricketts and Darien Woody all rushed for touchdowns and Kosi Onunkwo recovered a fumble in the end zone for another score as the Flashes remained unbeaten at 3-0 with the road win.

Florence accumulated 208 yards on the ground, including a team-high 67 by Ricketts.

Ayberk Timur had an interception, one of the Florence's two takeaways.

Woodbury 48, Paulsboro 12: Anthony Reagan Jr. rushed for five touchdowns for the second time in three games as the Thundering Herd rumbled past the host Raiders in the 107th meeting between the two squads.

Reagan, who finished with 275 yards on the ground in the game, has 12 rushing TDs in three games, raising his career to 31.

According to South Jersey football historian Chuck Langerman, Paulsboro owns a 58-46-3 lead in the series, which debuted in 1915.

Woodbury has won nine straight games - the longest current streak in South Jersey.

Cinnaminson 38, Palmyra 8: Kyle Willis ran for 116 yards and a score while Brian Finerghty added two rushing touchdowns as the Pirates polished off their third straight win.

Penns Grove 21, Salem 6: Bryce Wright had 18 carries for 118 yards and a touchdown and returned a blocked punt to the house as the Red Devils bested Salem for their first win of the year. Karon Ceasar added 17 rushes for 108 yards and a score. Penns Grove now leads the rivalry 56-45-6, according to head coach John Emel. The teams have been playing since 1912.

Friday's Games

Victor Oquendo found Marcus Upton for a 28-yard touchdown with 45 seconds to play as the Timber Creek High School football team rallied from an 11-point, fourth-quarter deficit to stun Rancocas Valley 21-18 victory in a battle of undefeated West Jersey Football League Memorial Division foes Friday night.

The Red Devils led 18-7 with less than three minutes to go and appeared to lock up the win with an interception in the end zone. However, the ball was fumbled on the return and Zyeir Green snatched it out of the air and ran across the goal line to to narrow the gap to 18-13 with 2:32 to play.

Timber Creek then recovered another fumble with 1:26 left to set up Upton's game-winning touchdown.

Rancocas Valley took an early 12-0 advantage on Nick Marco's 15-yard touchdown pass to Devin Duana and a blocked punt return score. Duana also had a 32-yard touchdown run on the’ first drive of the third quarter.

The win keeps the Chargers undefeated at 4-0 while Rancocas Valley fell to 3-1.

Mainland 47, Atlantic City 18: Stephen Ordille had 25 carries for 267 yards and 5 touchdowns as the Mustangs took down Atlantic City in a matchup of unbeaten WJFL Memorial squads. Mainland’s Cohen Cook had the first touchdown of the game with a 25-yard interception return and Rocco DeBiaso ran in a 10-yard score, as well.

Atlantic City quarterback Joe Lyons threw touchdown passes to Sah’nye Degraffenredit and Kahjuan Roseborough, and Raul Cabrera returned a fumble 22 yards to the house.

Millville 21, St. Augustine 7: Jayden Jones’ 84-yard fumble return touchdown with 2:06 remaining clinched the top-ranked Thunderbolts’ come-from-behind victory over the third-ranked Hermits on Friday night.

Millville trailed 7-0 at the break but scored 21 unanswered points over the final two quarters.

Jacob Zamot found Ta’Ron Haile for a 27-yard touchdown in the third period after a Kyon Conyers interception to get within 7-6, and Na’eem Sharp gave the Thunderbolts their first lead at 14-7 with his 6-yard scamper with 11:39 left. Sharp’s 9-yard carry on 4th-and-6 to begin the fourth was the key moment of the contest.

Highland 15, Clearview 8: Highland quarterback Connor Leary threw a go-ahead, 20-yard touchdown pass to Matt Tuttle with 2:21 to play to lift the Tartans to their first victory of the season.

Northern Burlington 27, Cherry Hill West 20: The Greyhounds returned a fumble to pay dirt with 10:49 to play to break a 20-20 tie and lock up their second victory of the campaign.

Pennsauken 13, Burlington Township 0: Pennsauken scored 13 second-half points to earn the win and bounce back from triple-overtime loss to Eastside last week.

Pleasantville 20, Glassboro 14: Ahmad Jones threw two first-half touchdown passes to Julius Townsel and Kwalil Shepperson had a 20-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter to help the Greyhounds (3-1) pick up their third victory in a row.

Glassboro freshman Xavier Sabb accounted for both of his team’s touchdowns – one on a kick return and another on a pass from Kristopher Foster, but the Bulldogs fell to 1-2 on the season.

Kingsway 38, Vineland 15: Senior quarterback Tommy Popoff fired a pair of TD passes to Benny Liles III, senior running back Neumann Rojas rushed for a pair of touchdowns and the Dragons’ defense produced four interceptions to earn the home win.

Junior Luke Nordone had two picks, earning him the team’s Turnover Belt for the evening.

Middle Township 45, Clayton 16: The Panthers improved to 4-0 on the year behind the ground attack of Remi Rodriguez, who ran for 180 yards and two touchdowns. It’s the second time in three years the Panthers have started a season with four straight victories.

The loss marks Clayton’s first of the season as the Clippers fall to 3-1.

Lower Cape May 40, Cumberland 0: The Caper Tigers built a 13-0 lead in the first half following two Dennis Serra field goals and a Jackson Browne 36-yard touchdown pass from Hunter Ray and never looked back. Cumberland drops to 1-3 after picking up its first win of the season over Pitman last week.

Woodstown 49, Deptford 7: The Wolverines won their third straight game to remain undefeated and have now outscored their opponents by a combined total of 111-21 this year. Their defense hasn’t allowed more than seven points in any of their three games this season. Deptford is now 0-3.

Gloucester Catholic 54, Lindenwold 6: The Rams (1-2) dominated their way to their first win of the season while the Lions dropped to 0-4.

Camden 39, West Deptford 7: Nasere Blakney had a pair of first-half touchdown runs as the Panthers cruised to the triumph. D'Hani Cobbs had an 82-yard punt return TD for the victors as well. Jaythan Candelario completed 9-of-14 passing for 128 yards and three scores while Judah Anthony added 82 yards on eight carries on the ground.

Delsea 35, Ocean City 14: Daniel Russo scored three rushing touchdowns as the Crusaders improved to 2-1 on the season. Quarterback Zach Maxwell ran for a score as well and Alex Grippo caught a TD pass.

Pitman 41, Buena 0: The Panthers picked up their first win of the season in dominating fashion thanks to a big game from senior Chase Rollins, who had three rushing touchdowns. Kyle Kubat threw a TD to Porter Kostiuk, Trey Tinges ran for a 45-yard touchdown and Ethan Loudner returned an interception 45 yards to the house for the game’s final score.

Pennsville 23, Gateway 7: After falling behind 7-0, Pennsville battled back with 23 unanswered points and improved to 2-1 on the season. Senior Skye Eppes had two rushing touchdowns to lead the way.

Gloucester 43, Audubon 6: Mason Widman scored four rushing touchdowns while Jake Zearfoss and Ibyn Obey each ran in one to help the Lions get their season record to 3-1. The previously unbeaten Green Wave fell to 2-1.

Bishop Eustace 13, Wildwood 7: The Crusaders improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2014. Wildwood (1-2) had its lone score come on a Ryan Troiano 80-yard punt return in the second quarter.

Haddon Heights 43, Sterling 0: The Garnets have won back-to-back games and now lay claim to a 2-1 record on the season. Sterling has lost three in a row since defeating Lindenwold 19-0 in Week 1.

Oakcrest 53, Bridgeton 0: Following two straight losses, the Falcons evened their record at 2-2 on the year in dominating fashion, while Bridgeton remains winless at 0-4.

Bordentown 33, Pemberton 7: Myles Hansford did a little bit of everything on Friday night to help the Scotties take down the Hornets. Offensively, Hansford scored on a 29-yard run and threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Ari Miller. On defense, Hansford returned an interception 75 yards to the house. Will Jacobs and Jose Santiago each scored a rushing touchdown for the Scotties as well.

Pemberton’s lone score came on a Anthony Carter 82-yard kickoff return in the third quarter.

Schalick 47, Riverside 18: The Cougars continued their early season dominance to improve to 4-0 for the first time since 2016. The Rams picked up their first loss of the year and now have a 2-1 record.

Maple Shade 18, New Egypt 0: The Wildcats picked up their first win of the season and are now 1-3 on the year. New Egypt has now lost three in a row since a 26-6 Week 1 win at Point Pleasant Beach.

Thursday's action

It didn't take long for the Cherokee High School football team to get back on track.

Following a 3-0 loss last week and facing its fourth-straight ranked opponent, Cherokee pinned a 23-0 loss on school district rival and No. 4-ranked Shawnee Thursday night in West Jersey Football League American Division action.

Sixth-ranked Cherokee defended its home turf with tough defense, earning the program's first shutout since the 2021 season-opener against Lenape. The team has yielded a combined 10 points over the last three weeks and have allowed 29 points total en route to a 3-1 record.

Cherokee's defense produced a safety, a touchdown when Luke Brown pounced on a fumble in the end zone and had three interceptions, two by Evan Bryfogle and another by Louis Rhodes.

Murad Campfield rushed for 139 yards a pair of touchdowns on 28 carries.

Cherokee will host its fourth game in five weeks when it welcomes Williamstown to Evesham Township on Sept. 29.

Holy Spirit 34, Washington Township 28 (2 OT): Sophomore Ty Costabile threw for three touchdowns but it was his rushing touchdown in the second overtime period that sealed the road win and kept the Spartans unbeaten at 4-0.

Costabile connected with Tahmir Jones, turning a pair of third-down plays into touchdowns in the first half.

Holy Spirit took a 28-21 lead in overtime when Costabile hit Taylor Cartwright for the go-ahead score.

After Washington Township answered to force another extra period, senior Ty Mercado delivered a huge interception to give Holy Spirit the opportunity to end the game with its second-overtime possession.

Holy Spirit will host the Holy War next week when St. Augustine comes to town.

Moorestown 34, Triton 0: Senior John Zohlman and junior Luke Dengler each rushed for two touchdowns and the Quakers notched their second shutout in three weeks with a home rout of the Mustangs.

Moorestown extended its winning streak to three, sparked by a defense that has allowed seven points over the stretch.

Willingboro 57, Delran 19: Sophomore quarterback Lamar Best fired four touchdowns passes and rushed for two more scores as the Chimeras tallied a season-high 57 points in the road win, the most for the program in a game since 2019.

Best has recorded 12 touchdown passes in four games, raising her career total to 35.

Willingboro has eclipsed the 50-point mark in each of its two wins this season. The Chimeras will play at St. Joseph next week.

Lenape 17, Williamstown 14: With 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, Lenape picked up its first win of the season.

Michael LeMay's 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter was the decisive score for Lenape, which also benefitted from a safety by its defense.

Lenape quarterback Jaelin Mims threw for 176 yards and a touchdown pass to Jordan Silver in the first half.

Paul VI 28, Seneca 27: Dom Santiago stuffed Colin Walsh on a two-point conversion attempt with 11 seconds left as Paul VI held on for the West Jersey Football League National Division victory.

The Golden Eagles got within a point after Zac Fearon scored on an 8-yard screen pass from Anthony Tirico. They decided to go for the win but couldn’t cross the goal line.

Santiago, also Paul VI’s quarterback, was 22-of-39 for 260 yards and 3 touchdowns and ran 9 times for 42 yards and a score. His 1-yard sneak with 1:52 remaining gave the Eagles a 28-21 advantage. They trailed 21-14 entering the fourth.

Tyree Roane stepped up for the victors with 9 grabs for 92 yards and 2 TDs, and Austin Bailey had 5 receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown on offense and a key pick on defense. Fearon had an excellent game in defeat with 18 carries for 99 yards and 2 scores and 6 grabs for 44 yards and 2 more TDs.

Hammonton 17, Eastern 14

Cherry Hill East 56, Holy Cross 25: Denzel Lee rushed for 236 yards and four touchdowns as the Cougars snapped a three-game losing streak with their first win of the season.

The 56 points are the most for Cherry Hill East since a 57-56 win over Cherokee in 2011.

East quarterback Zach Salsbery threw for 134 yards and a pair of TD strikes to Jaxson Bowman.

Absegami 28, Egg Harbor Township 13: Senior Richard Gibson rushed for a pair of touchdowns and caught a pass for a third score as Absegami snapped a two-game losing streak in style.

Junior quarterback Kendall Armstrong threw for 220 yards and a pair of touchdowns, raising his season total to 10, while Gibson has eight touchdowns in four games to power Absegami. His 4-yard TD run in the fourth quarter iced the victory.

Absegami (2-2) will have its home opener next week against Highland after starting the season with four straight road games.
