Sooners Braden Carmichael named Big 12 pitcher of the week

On the last weekend of the regular season, the Oklahoma Sooners dropped two of three to Oklahoma State as they battled for positioning ahead of the Big 12 baseball championships this week in Arlington.

In Oklahoma’s two losses on the weekend, the Sooners were outscored by the Cowboys 24-3. In their one win, Braden Carmichael pitched a gem, throwing a complete game shutout to lead the Sooners to a 5-0 win on Friday night.

For his efforts, Carmichael earned Big 12 pitcher of the week. It was the fourth conference award earned by Oklahoma in 2023. Carmichael’s shutout was the first for the Sooners since Dane Acker’s no-hitter back in March of 2020.

Carmichael allowed just four hits and surrendered zero walks on the evening, though he did hit a batter. Only twice did Carmichael allow multiple runners in an inning and he didn’t allow the Cowboys to reach third base all night.

It was a clutch performance for the fifth-year senior after the Sooners were forced to use six pitchers in the opener on Thursday, a 13-2 loss.

The Sooners now get ready for the Big 12 championships that begin on Wednesday. Oklahoma will take on Oklahoma State at 4 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
