Somerset wrestling has successful weekend

Dec. 19—Somerset Wrestling Club had a busy weekend.

On Saturday, Somerset Wrestling had eight wrestlers travel to Louisville, Ky., to participate in the 2023 Bluegrass Nationals tournament. Mason Brooks, in the Middle School 72lb Division, took home first place in his division, while Carson Stachulski, in the Novice 78lb Division, finished in second place. Tatum Strunk, in the Novice 74lb Division, and Maddox Mellencamp, in the Novice 86lb Division, both finished third. Other finishers included Jeffrey Turner, in the Novice 92lb Division, Brayden Brooks, in the Intermediate 59lb Division, and Eli Shepherd, in the Novice 135lb Division, in fourth place, as well as Conner Shepherd, in the Novice 135lb Division, in seventh place.

Special thanks Somerset Wrestling Club coaches Cody Vinsant, Doug Underwood and Tim Shepherd for traveling this this weekend and dedicating their time to these kids as they learn and compete!

On Sunday, with only eleven wrestlers competing, Somerset Wrestling Club placed second out of 20 scoring teams at the Taylor County Youth Tournament, scoring only 14.5 points less than the winning team, who had nine more athletes participating.

All eleven of the Somerset wrestlers came home with a medal.

Carson Stachulski, Conner Shepherd, Eli Shepherd and Maddox Mellencamp all placed first in their brackets. Carter Bloodsworth, Ashdon Morrison, Hezekiah Honaker and Trevin Durham finished in second in their divisions. Other finishers included Tatum Strunk and Jeffrey Turner in third place, as well as Jagger Durham in fourth place.
