Somers' St. Germain wins two mile race at New England Indoor Track and Field Championships

Mar. 7—Rachel St. Germain proved she was the top two mile runner in New England on Saturday.

Now, the Somers High senior will vie for the title of best in the country at that distance next weekend.

St. Germain, who will attend Quinnipiac University this fall, won the two mile event in a time of 10:36.93 Saturday at the New England Indoor Track and Field Championships in Boston.

Anna Keeley of Fairfield Ludlowe was second (10:49.61). Katherine Sanderson of Hall finished third (11:02.14) and Kathryn Marchand of Trumbull placed fourth (11:03.01).

St. Germain, who was named the Gatorade Connecticut Girls Cross Country Player of the Year, will compete in the 5,000 meters and 2 mile events at the New Balance National Track and Field Championships beginning Friday at The Armory in New York City.

Brittani Westberry of Windsor finished second in the 600 meters (1:35.53). The Glastonbury girls won the 4x800 relay with a time of 9:29.14.

Heslin drops title bout at New England championships

Xavier High's Jackson Heslin, a Marlborough native, reached the championship match in the 120-pound division at the New England wrestling championships but had to settle for second place after getting pinned by Rhode Island champion Jacob Joyce of Ponaganset in 4:39 Saturday at the Providence Career and Technical Academy.

Xavier, which won their first State Open title since 2012 a week ago, had three medalists — Heslin at 120, Thomas Lunt, who finished fifth at 220, and Kyle Levesque, who finished sixth at 126.

The Falcons amassed 82 points and finished second in the team competition. Saint John's Prep of Danvers, Mass., which had two individual champions and three finalists, earned the title with 95 points.

Killingly's Jack Richardson (145), Fairfield Warde's Will Ebert (170) and Guilford's Chris Murphy (195) each won individual titles while Heslin (120), New Milford's Evan Lindner (126), Simsbury's Zach Jones (152) and Norwalk's Brendan Gilchrist (195) each finished second.

East Hartford's Isaac Quiles pinned Ryan Conlan of La Salle Academy in 1:52 to take fifth place at 106 pounds.

Pacheco fifth in All-Around at state open

Tolland High's Charlotte Pacheco earned a fifth place finish with a score of 35.200 in the All-Around competition at the Gymnastics State Open Saturday at New Milford High.

Taylor Markley of Woodstock Academy won the event with a score of 38.775. Fairfield Warde's Emma Johnson (37.350) finished second, Woodstock Academy's Olivia Aleman (6.375) placed third and Morgan Flickinger of Hand (36.025) took fourth.

Markley won all five events to propel Woodstock Academy (141.525) to the team title. Hand (139.575) finished second, Fairfield Warde (139.150) placed third and St. Joseph (132.875) took fourth.

Pacheco finished in a tie for ninth in the floor exercise (8.850), a tie for 21st in the balance beam (8.400), a tie for ninth in the vault (9.050), and eighth in the uneven bars (8.900).
