Softball sectionals: Broken down bus, a 4A upset and a couple no-no's highlight night two

An oddity, an upset and a couple more no-hitters. Here's what happened during night two of state softball sectionals.

IHSAA softball sectionals: Central Indiana scores, schedule, updated pairings

From stranded to sectional final: Avon 7, Plainfield 1

Man, what a night for the Orioles. Their bus broke down on the way to Terre Haute, so they had to hitch a ride from the fine folks at South Putnam (after an unknown amount of time hanging out on the side of the road). From the looks of it, spirits remained relatively high and the players were able to get in some stretching and pregame workouts whilst waiting on transportation to THN.

The unexpected adventure had little impact on the Orioles' play against Plainfield: They broke open a 1-1 tie with two runs in the fourth (Emma Stopperich and Karly Anderson RBI doubles), another in the fifth (Hannah Sutton homer) and three runs in the sixth (Lilly Heath and Sutton with the RBIs).

Sutton finished with two hits, three RBIs and a couple runs scored; Heath and Lylah DeArmond also had two hits apiece. Madeline Herman allowed just the one run on two hits with eight strikeouts over seven innings.

Kylie Fish accounted for both of Plainfield's hits.

Avon will face (read on) in the Class 4A Sectional 12 final.

Patriots stun Bulldogs: Terre Haute North 9, Brownsburg 4

Terre Haute North delivered one of the tournament’s first major upsets (and the biggest surprise thus far), knocking out a red-hot Brownsburg team Tuesday.

Rayven Wilson and Emma Morrison shined in the middle of the Patriots’ lineup, going a combined 6-for-8 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Kara Salmon and Kenzie Zigler both picked up two hits apiece, while Kyleigh Walker allowed only three earned runs on 10 hits.

Brownsburg, which arrived on an 11-game win streak, had its opportunities. It managed just one run with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the fifth, then stranded the tying run on second in the bottom of the sixth. Those missed opportunities caught up to the Bulldogs in the seventh when Terre Haute cashed in with a five-run frame — highlighted by a two-run homer by Lucy Gibson — that left the score at 9-3.

Ashley Sylvia led Brownsburg at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Macy Twomey logged a hit and an RBI in the fifth and seventh innings; Kensly Larkin had two hits and an RBI.

Hailey Thompson struck out five.

Trojans v. Pios: Center Grove 4, Bloomington South 1; Mooresville 11, Bloomington North 1

We will be getting Center Grove vs. Mooresville in the Class 4A Sectional 13 championship game (finally).

We'll start with the host Trojans. Their bats were largely held in check by Panthers ace Kinsey Clopton, who allowed only two earned runs on four hits with 10 strikeouts and a walk. But the CG pitching tandem of Riley Henson and Taylor Barrett were up to the task. Henson allowed only one run on two hits with a walk and a couple strikeouts over five innings, then gave way to the freshman, who closed out the win with five Ks over two scoreless innings.

Brynn Meyer, Barrett, Madisyn Tharpe and Mae Munson accounted for the team's four hits.

Center Grove's opponent, Mooresville, followed last night's perfect game with an 11-1 rout of Bloomington North, wherein a nine-run onslaught between the fourth and fifth innings sent the fans home early (Zoey Kugelman put the ball in play to score Reagan Bauer and activate the mercy rule). Bauer had two hits and two RBIs; Kugelman had two RBIs and Cierra Cramer logged three hits, two runs and an RBI.

Kugelman also struck out seven with one unearned run on four hits.

No-hitter alert: Tri-West 10, Crawfordsville 0

Natalie Tharp threw a no-hitter with seven strikeouts to send the Bruins back to the Class 3A Sectional 25 championship game with a rout of Crawfordsville. Ily Hester, Emma Frye, Danica James, Kaycee Trivett and Savanna Trivett all had two hits apiece. Emma Charles had a home run, as well.

Moore mashes: Cathedral 16, Pike 1 (Class 4A Sectional 10)

There will be Players of the Week from sectionals. One of those nominees will probably be Cathedral's Anna Moore, who finished a double shy of the cycle vs. Pike with three hits, three runs and five RBIs.

Blackwell runs wild, but Warriors advance: Whiteland 6, Franklin 3

Here's a stat: Adeline Blackwell of Franklin swiped four bases as part of a 3-for-3 performance that also included a walk, a run scored and a triple. Pretty impressive.

But it wasn't quite enough against the Warriors, who scored four runs in the fourth to break a 2-all tie and punch their ticket to the Class 4A Sectional 14 final opposite East Central.

Kiley Sullivan led Whiteland with three hits and a couple runs scored. Josslyn Harbert posted a pair of RBIs, a pair of hits and a run scored.

Bulldogs win a nail-biter: Lapel 2, Frankton 1

Lylah Gore cranked a game-tying double, then freshman Addison Bodenhorn hit a sacrifice fly to score Paige Stires from third, sending Lapel to the Class 2A Sectional 40 final opposite Alexandria Monroe.

The Bulldogs registered 11 hits, but had only a couple runs to show for it. Stires led the way with three hits, while Gore added a pair.

Krystin Davis (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K), Karlie Jannings (3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB) and Ava Zdanowski (two shutout innings) ensured Lapel's two runs stood up.

Another no-no: Triton Central 9, Heritage Christian 0

Brylie Couch twirled a seven-inning no-hitter with a walk and 13 strikeouts. Couch allowed a couple base runners for the game (one walk and one HBP), while the offense was powered by Jayda McKee, Madison Collins and Madi Peterson all with two hits apiece, and Lillian Fillippinie, who had a hit, a run scored and three RBIs.
