Class A semifinals

PEARL RIVER — The Section 1 Class A championship game comes down to the top two seeds in the tournament and they are a pair of teams that are quite familiar with each other.

It will be second-seeded Pearl River vs. top-seeded Tappan Zee at 4 p.m. Saturday at North Rockland for the Class A championship.

"Tappan Zee's an excellent team," Pearl River coach Chris Woolgar said. "Very deep and talented. Multiple pitchers, offense from top to bottom is very tough. We split with them, two close games. They're the one seed for a reason. What better way to have a Class A final."

During the regular season, the league rivals split the regular season with Tappan Zee winning the first game 3-1 in April and Pearl River winning the second 3-2 earlier in May.

Tappan Zee's been to the finals the last few years and lost one year ago to Ursuline. The last time Pearl River made the Class A finals was 2016.

Here's how both teams advanced to Saturday's Section 1 Class A finals.

Pearl River celebrates at first as the second-seeded Pirates defeat sixth-seeded Nyack 3-2 in eight innings in Wednesday's Section 1 Class A softball semifinals.

No. 2 Pearl River 3, No. 6 Nyack 2, 8 innings

Pearl River has shown a resilency all season long and they needed a little late inning magic in Wednesday's Class A semifinals.

They were down 2-0 to league rival Nyack going into the bottom of the seventh but were having one big problem for most of the game. They couldn't lay down the bunt all game long at Pearl River.

Down 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, third-baseman Angie Franzese led off with a triple to right field off of RedHawks ace Gianna Longo. First baseman Kayla Damon came up and laid down a bunt that coach Woolgar called the most important bunt of the season. The at bat went down as a fielder's choice but it scored Franzese to tie the game up.

"He (Woolgar) told me when I was up to bat to take a strike until I get one," Damon said. "I did. He then said if there's a strike, get the bunt down first and that's what I did. I've never bunted down the first base line till now."

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Pirates short stop Cat Arnold led off with a single. She advanced to second on a walk from pitcher Kiera Luckie. Both moved up a base after a passed ball. Bella Caparrelli was walked to load the bases. Catcher Brooke Donnelly was then hit by the first pitch she saw to bring in the winning run.

"You can never take a team for granted," Franzese said. "I think our team did a really good job of staying in it and not giving up. We just scrapped together hit after hit. I'm so proud of my team."

Class AA quarterfinals

NEW CITY — To borrow a line from Star Trek, Somers softball is boldly going where they haven't been before.

Coming into Monday, the Tuskers had never gotten out of the Section 1 quarterfinals, which they made for the first time last year.

"Last year our season goal was to win one sectional game, Tuskers head coach Teresa Ricci said. "This year, our goal was to win two sectional games. All we have done this entire year was achieve our goals and now we're on to another goal."

After a 12-1 over fourth-seeded Clarkstown North in the Section 1 Class A quarterfinals, the fifth-seeded Tuskers will see how far they can climb.

The Tuskers got the offense going right from the first pitch. Shortstop Katie Cole slapped the first pitch of the game into left center field for a double.

From there, the Tuskers got out to a 3-0 lead and they didn't look back.

"That got us fired up," Tuskers center fielder Kaleigh Conti said. "We're always trying to build from one person to the next. It was a team effort."

Being able to send seven batters up in that top of the first inning helped settle the team down before they took the field in the bottom half of the inning.

"It kind of shocked me at first," Tuskers ace Emily Boyle said of Cole's first hit "She smacked it right into the outfield and I knew we got this."

In the top of the third, they sent 12 to the plate and scored six runs to break the game open.

"Everyone on the team no matter if it's the top of the order or the bottom, we came out strong from the beginning," Ricci said. "They know they want it. Somers has never been in this position so it's great for us to be here."

Player of the game

Katie Cole, Somers: The sophomore took the first pitch of the game to left center field for a double and that set the tone for the rest of the game. It gave them the blueprint to handle the Rams Lauren Tighe in the circle and were able to pass the baton down the line many times throughout the game.
