Smithfield baseball and softball teams advance; Barrington, NK boys tennis teams win, too

BASEBALL

Division I

Portsmouth 11, Coventry 8

Host Portsmouth overcame a pair of multiple-run deficits to defeat Coventry in a Pod 1 preliminary round playoff game that started Tuesday and finished Wednesday. The game was halted by darkness on Tuesday after five innings with Portsmouth leading, 9-8. Coventry returned to Portsmouth on Wednesday but failed to get a hit against Patriots’ pitcher Oliver Rey in its two at-bats. Rey also cracked a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth to give his team some breathing room. John Mass led Portsmouth’s 13-hit attack with a double and three singles. Matt Nolan swatted a bases-clearing double in the second inning and also had a single. Casey Cord had two singles as eight of nine Patriots had at least one hit. Logan Downey went 3-for-4 for Coventry. Tom Turner contributed a triple and single for the Oakers. Portsmouth will face Cumberland in the double-elimination portion of the bracket on Friday.

Smithfield 2, Cranston East 1

Runs were hard to come by as both teams’ starters threw gems, but Ryan Flynn’s fourth-inning sacrifice fly proved to be the difference in the Sentinels’ 2-1 win over the Thunderbolts.

Smithfield starter Brayden Shadoian – who finished with 10 strikeouts – and Cranston East’s John Devine – who finished with nine – were both on top of their games, with both refusing to let the offenses do anything of note. The Thunderbolts scored in the top of the first after some smart baserunning by Angel Garcia caught the Sentinels sleeping, but it was the last run Shadoian would surrender.

An RBI single by Chris Lopez tied the game for Smithfield before Flynn’s sacrifice fy in the fourth. Cranston East nearly came back, leading off the seventh inning with a triple, but Shadoian struck out the next batter, got a ground out and after an intentional walk, got a fly ball to center field to end the game.

The win sends the Sentinels to the double-elimination portion of the Division I tournament, where they’ll get a chance to play La Salle, the top seed from I-B. The loss ends Cranston East’s season.
