Sixers guard Tyrese Maxey discusses confidence in his step back triples

PHILADELPHIA–The Philadelphia 76ers have a potentially very good backcourt in the form of James Harden and Tyrese Maxey. While Harden is already established as a legitimate superstar and Hall of Famer, Maxey still has some development to work on, but he is certainly off to a good start.

In just his second NBA season, Maxey is averaging 17.3 points and 4.5 assists while shooting 47.9% from the floor and 40.8% from deep. He has continued to add to his game as he has gone from a 30.1% 3-pointer as a rookie to the high percentage he’s at in his second season.

Playing next to Harden thus far has been helpful for Maxey as well as he is averaging 24.7 points and is shooting 9-for-14 from deep in three games next to Harden. He is knocking down catch-and-shoot 3s and he is now adding step-back triples to this game.

“Just the work,” said Maxey. “I work every single day on it. I’m pretty confident in my game, period just because of the hard work. I tell everybody that the confidence comes from the nights and the mornings when no one is in the gym watching. That’s why I’m able to perform in front of however many people there are in the stands.”

Maxey is one of the fastest players in the league as he is able to get to the basket with a lot of quickness. Therefore, the development of this step-back triple has made life much easier for him on the offensive end as assistant coaches Sam Cassell and Spencer Rivers have been trying to explain to him.

“My speed is the factor because everyone is trying to take away from me going downhill and getting to the lane,” Maxey added. “If I can go hard and then get back to the 3 fast, then I have an advantage because I have a lot of space. They are trying to back off me because they are scared of my speed, so Spence has been telling me, Sam has been telling me, you know if I can learn to go fast and then come back hard then shoot I will be able to get a lot of space.”
